Stinger on June 28, 2006Poetic licence, 'poetarum licentiae liberiora', is a truly wonderful thing. It allows one to elaborate, embellish and completely fantasise, or to recreate past worlds that have been inhabited by oneself and by others never met. The real reason, and indeed challenge, of poetry as i see it is not to decipher the subject for the reader, but rather to invite the reader into the poem in order for them to become the subject or to 'experience' the situation for themselves. To create a scene or situation that invokes a real feeling or emotion in the reader and that allows them to 'see' the full picture or to be connected in some way to the concept, situation or argument, is the end for which words are the means.
Some of the work within my previous compiled volumes (which i replicate here) is completely, strictly and irrevocably based upon my own experiences and people known, whilst there is also much that is purely fantasy or an interpretation of situations experienced by strangers; as well as the blatantly hypothetical scenarios. The most important thing to remember, however, is that all poetry comes from within: either from within the mind or from within the heart.
