BATTLE OF THE SONNETS ROUND 5

The poetry in this contest has been amazing. And the sonnets keep getting better and better. This round, I think, will be a real challenge with a controversial "sonnet." The form is the controversial form of the

SARABANDA (also spelled SARABANDE)

This form will give you the opportunity to be original and creative. It is a VERY flexible form which allows freedom in a mildly mandated format. Since I think that this form will be a challenge, I will be willing to add time to the contest.

Here is the list of continuing contestants:

I have written a new scoring matrix for this contest which will judge your poem in Structure, Content, Texture, and Evocation. Each area is more specific in its requirements. Each area will give a 100% score. Any poem with a cumlative score of 350 or more will be added to the Preliminary List. As in the other contests, I will not comment until the end of the contest, but will notify you that I have read and scored your poem.

This should be an exciting round. I am looking forward to the wonderful poetry. I am hoping you will stray from the tight structure and rules of the conventional sonnets you have been writing.

RULES:
1. Nothing new, same as the last four contests.
2. No pictures, the poem must stand on its own merit
3. Check catagories
4. Texture will be important

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on August 6, 2007
  • Rewards: Gold: 800, Silver: 400, Bronze: 200, Honorable mention: 4 people
  • Final notes:
This round seemed more difficult than the others. I admit it had a more stringent scoring system. The scoring sheet was given as one of the links in this round. Each area was scored at 100%/ The average for the contest in each area was: Structure, 91.3%; Content, 98.8%; Texture, 95.4%, and Emotional response, 91%. Any contestant who wishes to kow her individual score may IM me and I will reply. It was interesting to me that all of you chose the tetrameter when you could have used any meter. All of you chose the iamb when any metrical foot would have been fine. The tetrameter gave a 2/4 measure to the poem and some of the poems did not have the subject which went well with this meter.

Gold to Flamenco Beat. I heard the snapping fingers, the clicking heels of the zapedeado, the snap of the castenets. After I finished reading the poem I said "Ole!"

Silver to To Know or Not to Know. The 2/4 rhythm lent itself to the dual choices in the poem.

Bronze to Promises. The second and third place poems had the exact same score so I had to use the score for emotional response as the final There was a 2% difference.

The final four receive Honorable Mentions.

The Sarabanda with the content as Flamenco Beat, but I felt it lacked the passion and therefore had less emotional impact.

Midnight Song. This is a very nice poem, but the sad theme did not hold up against the flash and fire of the dance which the poem should emulate.

On the Road. This also is a very nice poem, but lacks emtion.

Challenge. The challenge was so mildly stated that I was at a lose wondering what it was and I how I should feel..

This is the last round in the contest for individual wins. There will be one more round in which all the scores will be tallied and the contest winner with the highest total schore will take the gold for the entire contest.

    See you there!!

wow, I have never heard of this. Of course I won't enter, but I'll have fun 'playing along' with Internet Host 'Mamad',lol. I think your contest would make a great idea for a TV gmae show- a poetry slam. I am surprised no one has yet come up with it. It would be a success at bringing poetry to the rest of the world!

I am sooo happy about this silver trophy, you cannot imagine ... I was a bit worried about this round, since I have struggled a bit with my poem ... well, it was worth the headache ...

thank you so much, dolly !

and margaret is going to be so excited to have won the gold, she's on vacation and this should make a wonderful welcome-back-present for her ...

congratulations also to pamela and the four other truly gifted poets ...
