Enter your single sonnet into this contest but be sure it has not gained a trophy or HM from a recent Winkling Contest. You must be able to place a link in your notes to the sonnet form you are emulating in the 1500s and that link should be to a period poem of the 1500s.
Remember, if a poet is born in 1486 say, then that person's mature poetry will lie in the 1500s whereas if a person is born in 1588, this is not so!
Do think of people like Wyatt, Surrey, Spenser, Sir Philip Sidney, Shakespeare and choose one as your model for rhyme scheme.
It is standard practice that non-Winklers who enter Winkling contests are gently invited to submit an application to join Winklings Group. Note: This is NOT a requirement for entry to this contest! Such applications will be looked at sympathetically by management.
Simply PRESS.
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on October 17
- Rewards: Gold: 3000, Silver: 500, Bronze: 200
- Final notes: We had lots of interpretations of what was reuired in this contest. I enjoyed all poems and felt sorry when inconsistecies arose in choppy meter or 13 instead of 14 lines even when the poem itself said it had "14 lines"!
Also, I looked for consistent diction in terms of the poem written.
Gold goes to a really solid effort in the Surrey Sonnet, "Where Love Went". Congratulations poet.
Silver to an unconventional sonnet, with political issues: "Who's Really Learned From Experiencew On The World Stage". Good job!
Bronze to a valiant effort of high interest written in the quaint, old Early English style: "Absolution".
Finalist: Till We Meet Again".
I formally extend Winkling Membership by application to management to you all if you are non-Winklings. Lyndon. xxxxxxxx

No 12 year olds writing poetry in the 16th C? It's a great idea for a contest. I'll see if I can come up with something.

Ah! You have me there.
I shall change that to "mature poetry".

I wish ...
I felt up to writing something, but I just don't. Good luck with this in any case. -

Place in a prewrite ...
Any prewrite.
I mean as long as the rhyme scheme is from the 1500s.
