Goss' Socially Conservative Poetry Contest

Goss' Socially Conservative Poetry Contest

The theme of this poetry is social conservatism. First prize is 300 points.

I would like to see poems dealing with such topics as:

* Unborn children
* Traditional Marriage
* Chastity
* Personal Responsibility
* Faith
* Combating socialism and secular humanism
* Democracy, rights freedoms and responsibilities

These are just some suggestions. Many more are possible.

But please NO pro-death penalty or pro-gun poems.

* No erotica or adult humour
* No bloody, gory or violent poems
* No excessive swearing or vulgarity, including bathroom humour.

LENGTH: Up to 25 lines. If you submit a poem longer than that, it'd better be amazing, but no epics, please.

NUMBER OF ENTRIES: Up to three per poster.

STYLE: Rhyme or free verse is fine. I would like to see poems that show some polish and technique-- not some spur-of-the-minute angsty poetry.

Pre-writes are allowed IF I have not commented on them already.

SUGGESTIONS: Try reading some of my own poetry to get ideas. I'm a devout Catholic and I like Dr. Phil, if that helps.

JUDGING

Poems will be judged on the following criteria:

1. Whether the poem conforms to the rules. I reserve the right to not finish reading poems that break the rules.
2. Literary sophistication. Word choice, sound, imagery, allusions, etc and their appropriateness.
3. Musicality.
4. How much I like the message.

PRIZES

1st Place: 300 points
2nd Place: an undetermined number of points.
3rd Place: an undetermined number of points.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on July 11, 2004
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
    Thank you all for participating in the socially conservative poetry contest. It's so important that we get our message out there and poetry is one good way of doing that.

    I chose Take Strength in Grief by Hoosier Poet because of the evocative metaphors and the controlled line-lengths. I chose Open-minded for silver by Ophelie because I fully concurred with her denunciation of hypocrisy on the part of the liberal elites in our society. It's good to stand up for conservative values, but the politically correct must have their own faults shown up. I thought The Rain by Fallen Solitude captured the tragedy of lost lives and the complete indifference our society has towards them.

    I see why this happened.

    I have blocked out "Adult" content as one my options. Your poem does not appear on my list. I hadn't remembered that I had that as one of my options. I apologize for the error and inconvenience. To compensate you for your trouble, I will applaud your poem.

    I changed the contest poem "The Cry of the Aborted" to a regular poem but it remained in this contest, so I deleted the poem and that removed it while the contest was going on. I've since undeleted and so it's back. Thought you might want to know.

    Although this contest was made (and closed) a while ago, I feel it was an excellent idea. I read quite a few of these poems and they made a refreshing change from the massive amount of liberal writes within this site. A good contest, I loved the idea and enjoyed reading some of the entries
