A kiss of death sealed his fate.
This was the beginning of the end.
His executioners started to angrily debate.
It is not an enemy who reproaches him,
Then He could bear it;
Nor is it one who hates him
But it a companion and a familiar friend
It was dark inside and out.
They mocked him and spit in his face
False accusers began to shout.
The entire scene was a disgrace.
Malicious witnesses rose up;
They asked him of things unknown
Hated without a cause.
Humiliated with spit on his beard.
The time was illegal for a trial.
Their motive was rooted in selfish pride.
They accused one in whom was no guile,
Yet he was guilty ever before he was tried.
A lamb without any blemish,
A sheep without a single spot,
He who knew no wrong
Became what was wrong.
Without sanction, he was sentenced to die.
Before the governor he was led.
Every accusation they gave was lie,
But the leaders were determined to see him dead.
A stone rejected by the builders,
Despised and forsaken,
A man of sorrows,
Not esteemed as he deserved.
He was silent before his magistrate,
He uttered not a word in defense,
He sealed his own agonizing fate
Though he had committed no offense.
No crying out, No raisings His voice,
No voice to be heard in the street
His mouth was not opened.
His silence amazed his executioner.
The governor had him scourged until he nearly died,
Hoping this would satisfy there need for retribution,
For he knew the leaders were full of jealousy and pride,
But nothing would do except for an execution.
Crushed for the wrongs of others,
Scourged to heal the sick,
Chastised for others well-being,
Pierced for sins not his own.
He face was marred more than any man before or since.
Every bone of his broken body could be counted.
His back was flesh torn like mince.
His exceedingly great worth was as nothing accounted.
Horrified by the sight of him,
Looking no more like a man,
Disfigured and abhorred,
Startling all peoples.
Considered as a criminals he was lead away
Though he was completely innocent and pure.
Among vengenous wolves he was the prey.
He did not deserve all he had to endure.
A sheep to the slaughter,
A lamb before the shearers,
Innocent among the thieves,
A man condemned to die.
By his hands and feet, He was nailed to a tree.
The pain was excruciating as he hung to die.
In shame he hung naked for all to see,
Rejected even by his Father on high.
“My God, My God why?”
“Why have you forsake me?”
He lifted his eyes to the sky
An took his last breath to set us free.
For this reason he had come to earth
To give his children a brand new birth,
To raise the dead to life, life abundantly,
To set the enslaved wicked free.
Author notes
A innocent man died to set the guilty free.
In a garden Jesus was betrayed by a kiss from his friend Judas. This kiss identified him as the one to arrest.
He was first tried by the Jewish religious leaders in what was an illegal trial under Jewish law. They condemned him to death but had no authority under Roman rule to execute him.
He was then brought before the governor, Pontious Pilot to have him tried. They presented false accusations to Pilot. Jesus gave no answer of defense to the accusations. Pilot first had Jesus scourged. This was not enough to satisfy the religious leaders. They enticed to crowd that had gathered to cry for Jesus' crucifixion. Pilot, fearing a riot, had Jesus crucified. Jesus was innocent of any crime. Even Pilot had recognized this.

There have been so many great writes in this contest and this fall chief among them. You did a spectacular job here and the overall aesthetic presentation was quite appealing as well. This is a great entry. Thank you for entering our contest and good luck!

This is a poem that could be read to Christian children to have them more aware of this hero. the language is easy and yet it holds an urgency. Well done!
