Christmas Peace in America

“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.’”

Peace on earth, can it be?
Good will toward men?
Can it ever happen?
Years from now, perhaps we’ll see…

American Revolution 25,324 died
War of 1812 2,260
Mexican War 13, 283

Peace on earth, can it be?
When will war ever end?
Can differences ever mend?
Years from now, perhaps we’ll see…

Civil War 863,153 died
Spanish-American War 2,446

Peace on earth, can it be?
Is any cause just and right?
Is concord possible when we fight?
Years from now, perhaps we’ll see…

World War I 116,516 died to end all war
World War II 405,399 died for democracy

Peace on earth, can it be?
Are we capable of doing good?
Or will we always shed blood?
Years from now, perhaps we’ll see…

Korean War 54,246 dead
Vietnam War 56,244
Panama Invasion 23
Gulf War 148
Iraq War over 2,000 so far

Peace on earth, can it be?
Good will toward men?
Can it ever happen?
Years from now, perhaps we’ll see…

Author notes

I was listening to Bing and David sing "Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy" and I thought about the lack of peace on earth we have.

a few years back taking the tour of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg, the guide had made mention of how our lives today are different because of those lives lost during the Civil War. different in that many of those young lives lost, as well as those in past and current wars, do not pass to another generation, another child for our present and future, maybe a miraculous spiritual influence, doctor, teacher or scientist, etc. your poem seems so reverently and eloquently speak to this, and I hope someday all the world's people can come to peace and live fulfilled and complete lives.

Oh man this is really good! I love the statistics that you have included, makes people realize the message of your poem. As far as what you are saying, I hope we will have peace one day, We just have to keep in mind that things are not always what they seem, and not to believe everything we see on T.V. Awesome poem!
