Where does my contentment lie?

Where does my contentment lie?
In the fleeting attention of a single beauty?
In the affirmation of deeds done for reward?
In the temporary pleasure of the senses?
Am I bound to my circumstances alone?

Should my contentment be tied to earth,
I should become the dirt of the very ground.
Happiness would rise with the sun
And end with decent of the moon.
I would cease to ascend to a new day.
The darkness of night would envelop my destiny

Should I pursue only that which makes me happy?
What happens when it ceases?
Ceases to make me happy?
Ceases to bring the same level of pleasure?
When the same measure offers less?
Do I pursue more or different?

When pain comes do I medicate?
Do I numb its affect?
Do I mask its harm?
Do I run from it?
Do I ignore it?
Do I endure it?

For the joy set before Him
Jesus endured the pain of the cross.
He did not numb it with wine.
He felt pain to its full extent.
He chose joy
Not the temporary relief of pleasure.

Paul learned to be content
In every circumstance
Weather in want or plenty
Weather full or hungry.
He did all through Christ
Who was his strength

All this world has to offer
Is to be considered rubbish
Compared with knowing Jesus
And the joy he chose being crucified
Because he loved his own,
For nothing else matters.

This is contentment
To know your identify
As Abba's beloved child
Love not earned or gained
But love received from Him
Who freely, unconditionally gives away.

Author notes

I chose to numb the pain today. I chose to pursue temporary pleasure today. This was written to remind me what Jesus chose and what I should choose daily.

I can relate, as can many other christians. So offten we want somethign we can see, we want the pain releiver we can touch and feel. i'm guilty of this to. But anyway, it was a wonderful poem and i really enjoyed it. I think all christians should read something like that every day.

    Write on
