Country dancing

My hobby's country dancing,
Oh, that's the thing for me!
A pastime quite entrancing,
As all my friends agree!
My hobby's country dancing,
A pastime quite entrancing,
Around the Drill-Hall prancing
In modest revelry!

With side-step neatly slipping
How light of foot are we!
And now discreetly skipping
Like butterfly or bee!
With side-step neatly slipping,
And now discreetly skipping,
To music sweetly tripping -
All hail, Terpsichore!

Now forward and back gliding,
Observe, and you will see:
In straight lines we're abiding,
As straight as straight can be!
Now forward and back gliding,
In straight lines we're abiding,
A figure we call "siding" in
Our terminology!

Oops! Oversight alarming,
A near catastrophe!
I quite forgot the "arming" -
Oh, silly, silly me!
An oversight alarming,
I quite forgot the "arming"!...
But isn't the tune charming,
That rustic melody?

As in our sets we mingle,
How swift the moments flee!
"Hey", "Allemande", "Turn single!",
The terms are poetry!
As in our sets we mingle -
"Hey", "Allemande", "Turn single" -
My blood is all a-tingle,
With youthful energy!

So I go country dancing,
Each Thursday after tea,
Around the Drill-Hall prancing,
Though I'm an O.A.P!
So I go country dancing,
Around the Drill-Hall prancing,
An evening quite entrancing with
My very special "He"!

Author notes

For the information of readers outside the UK... "O.A.P" = "Old Age Pensioner", i.e. currently man over 65 years of age or woman over 60 (though in response to pressure from the feminist lobby, the pensionable age for women is to to be raised, over the next few years, to parity with that of men!)

Well written, the rhythm and rhyme as well as the form in this make it very easy to read, but also enjoyable. You've given me a glimpse into a kind of dancing I haven't really tried very much, and shown your passion for it.
    Well penned.

Delightful combination of sound, rhythm, and movement, captured in rhyme and repetition. The poem becomes its subject. Well done throughout.

    winning steps and write!

    Vera,

Made me step lively, if only by reading your words. Having developed severe arthritis, my country dancing days are over...but o, the memories you bring back; thank you! Enjoyed the delightful melody. Sorry to hear of your health woes, if you don't mind, may I pray for you?

    (((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

It does, indeed have a tune... which came to me first, before all the words "appeared" in my mind...(That happens with a lot of my poems!) In "real life", I shall probably not be dancing much (in the physical sense) for the next few months, as I shortly due for a mastectomy... However, we can all "dance" in our minds... The Ukrainian poet, Lesya Ukrainka, who had tuberculosis of the bones, when confined to bed and virtually unable to move, was seen to be tapping her foot under the bed-clothes, and when asked what she was doing, she replied: "I am playing the piano!"

Now this made me smile. Being from Texas, I am no stranger to country dancing and even the rhythm of the piece gives it a feel. It is easy to experience the fun of it all in the reading. In this poem, I find not only a picture in my mind, but motion and atmosphere as well.
