(02B) Québec Snow Birds (Tanka) - Version 2

Missing image
by ~Gregg Rowe~

His dream constructed :
on cold winter silver days --
chop white birch, - I hear,

songs of Mother’s season, - stop --
watch, Québec snow birds fly south

Author notes

The second version is different because while Canadian Geese speak of birds migrating south for the winter, the use of Canadian snow birds is a double meaning--not only do the birds fly south but so do the majority of Quebec people (hence the term ' Quebec Snow birds '.  So the meaning becomes more poignant when the man is left all alone to build his dream house while his friends have flown south with the snow birds from Canada.

Tanka:

Tanka is similar to Haiku (See Week 1), but is the most rigidly adhered to form in terms of structure. It is composed of 5 lines of 31 syllables or less, using a short/long/short/long/long format (5/7/5/7/7). Overall, Tanka consists of two separate divisions in terms of rhythm structures, each of about one breath length to recite.

this is so pretty. some of the 'snowbirds' that come this far south are so friendly...some just want the warmth. that's the folks, now the birds, the feathery type, now there is a beautiful thing to see, hundreds, flying in V and squawking as they fly over our fields with a joyous greeting and a salute to the southern climate that calls to them every year.
