Of Grooves, Vinyl and Scratches

Missing image

"Darlin' you send me"

Oh' God yes-
as the groove in my psyche
swoons, sways so slowly.
   There is something -
              so tempered about touchin vinyl.

Some may not even know, what I'm talking about
Ever decreasing sounds, that burn within me,
                          even when Sam sings-
Oh' Lord, I'd believe in angels, if you brought him home.

And yes, it sends me
                      plastic karma and essential nuances
of design, covers to electrify
testify-
      Super fly- Super fly.

Will it go round in circles,
even cliched catches of something nostalgic,
                                             the hiss, scratch
tangible touch of that cool groove, on enlightened ears.

I was reminded today, that I should believe in-

the word
God, Jesus and Sam Cooke-
                      sex (sometimes)
           drugs (maybe)
                             rock & roll (of course)

             Elvis and a little less
conversation.

Author notes

I have over 500 LP's several thousand singles and I still love to hear the hiss and scratch of vinyl...

call me old fashioned.. ...  I don't care..

Special references to Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder and Elvis Presley...

    AMEN Sister! sing it!
Good thing you and Al are so much older than me - i would hate to be able to relate to such an antiquated poem.

i am sorry i missed this, this morning ... the write is as mesmerising as watching the vinyl go round and around ... so nicely done Gill ... in the first stanza i am not sure you need that second 'so' - the extra long pause works just as well at 'something' ... although in re-reads perhaps its the break that is where i falter ...

    there is something -
    so tempered about touching

the first 'so' is conducive when rolling those ssssss's around one's tongue .... love the alliteration through the lines ...

i am also not sure about 'plastic karma' ... its the plastic that i stumble over ...

just musing ... heh ... you sure do know how to write ! >>> GINA

Praise be to voodoo for vinyl things singing round and round the music of my growing up, going out, and getting buried treasures as the turntable hums along at 33 and one third revolutions per blessed minute.

I have 300 carefully selected and often played pieces of pure heaven, each preserved in plastic sleeves and when I die (assuming I have no children) they will be passed to my nephew and he will love them as much as I do.

    Great job, Gill!

Damnit... I forgot the smell... yes-
they do have a certain smell, that is evocative of time, place, sound and all that...

I once burnt my brother's Slade LP's in the back garden... and made, what I said were ashtrays... he then set fire to my Donny Osmond posters... we were rather nazzy and nasty to each other in those days... lololololol

thankyou hun... lovely words as usual

You forgot the smell they have a particular smell don't they. I have a wind up gramophone I use for 1940s events with some 78s of swing and Glenn Miller and stuff. Boy it is loud! And when I was about 2 I sat on a record and broke it. It was my favourite tune and my dad put the broken pieces on the fire. I watched them curl and melt and I cried. You know, he didn't shout at me or anything that time, we just watched it make fantastic shapes together. Phew. Anyway, excellent poem as usual, and particularly excellent ending.

remember the 78's.probably not, that may be a bit before your time, but i still hold onto my vinyl too.it's kind of hard to part with.i've learned that they are quite valuable though because many of them are out of stock.i recently had someone offer me $125 for my gladys knight album.where it's my favorite and although i have it on a cassette tape and cd,i still can't part with it.this piece has a great nostalgic flavor.it shows your passion for the music.sam sooke's "you send me" a classic that reminds me of my first crush.this was another great write from you.as they used to say and the hits just keep on coming!

    VERY ENJOYABLE!

A truly wonderful trip back to when music really was the best. And yes, the scratches and the mixed grooves are what makes it so very special. A very enjoyable poem.

Ya know vinyl hasnt gone out into extinction just yet. I read an article in my local sunday paper that there are places that still order and sale 33's, 45's and if you are lucky the thick 78's. I am in PA and those places that were featured in the article were in Pittsburgh. I even gave my children, ages 11 and 10, a lesson about records last weekend. They were intrigued very much to find out how CD's have evolved into our society from their vinyl ansestors. Great poem. Well done.

this does take me back to the days of listening to the record player in my room and singing along. i don't mind the CD's that are out now, but why do they have to be so dang hard to open? you did a good job here.

This sure did bring back alot of memories. I just don't know what to do with all that vinyl anymore. I miss the album covers and inserts that I didn't need a magnifying glass to understand. Oh well, it's a dead discussion, time marches on. Good Luck! RC

    this may be wierd, but this was pretty sexy...I mean, how many different things can this mean;
    "Oh' God yes-
as the groove in my psyche
    swoons,
    sways so slowly.
    There is something so-
    tempered about touching
    vinyl."
Like vinyl could mean a car seat or something..

    :-P

    "Elvis and a little less
    conversation."
    nice.

    weeeeeeee yesyes I like it.
