On Staying Alive and Reading Poetry

I was miserable in the bookstore
so few poetry books
  to swell the quiet mind
           spongesoaked wounds
to be licked clean-
with new crisp pages
        the turning
of white embossed
love.

I found
-Staying Alive
an anthology of "real poems for unreal times."

My blood spoon fed my brain
like a neo-embryonic cluster
I grew in seconds,
        I saw the words-
         Hips
         closets
         frank stains
         hawks
         herons
         and manna
               Oh' the Gods
                        yes the Gods-

Surely, the snow will melt,
 wet slippery tarmac
 will sink turpentine eyes
 & swirl patterns.
Whilst I clutched my new book
close to comfort-
           on the bus
               All the way home

Love this... I have a collection of poetry books and always love when I discover a new one. I recently discovered a poet
who I absolutely love reading. Her name is Nancy Tripp King.
She is from the South.. North Carolina. I love those Southern
    writers.

Thankyou for your lovely comment and I'm sorry that you don't get a chance to visit a bookstore... I do love them..

    This is a wonderful poem.
It's a shame that culture doesn't respect poetry in the same way it respects novels. I'm from a small town (with no book stores) so I must rely on my public library. Sadly, their selection is meagre too!
Thanks for sharing this piece. Enjoyed!

You know.. I go out to barnes and noble every weekend.. and i've had a hard time picking out a good poetry book... there are alot to choose from in that store... recently i've been reading loves poems by E.E. Cummings.. and his style I think actually reflects my own that i've sort of created... or been using. Good books are hard to track down sometimes so i'm glad you were able to become satisfied with your choice.

    hey chilly

glad to see you bought a new book. i'm something of a compulsive shopper when it comes to poetry books. have around 70 now. bought myself $200 worth of collections a week ago, including "Poems for the new Millenium 1" which is an amazing anthology of contemporary verse.

anyway, great poem. the last stanza felt perhaps a bit sentimental, but other than that, excellent!

enjoy your new book; soak up those words use them as a warm coat against the cold snow...

i was in waterstones a few days ago with my son and wandered to the poetry section - his derisory reark made me want to poke his eyes out... but then he doesnt know his aged parent mummy likes to write and CAN read TOO! He says he is putting me in a home when i am fifty - actually I can't wait for some peace and quiet so i can read...

The two great social problems of our age; not enough poetry in bookstores and not enough classical music on the air-waves. Excellent!

This is an excellent write. Emotions are strong and I really felt like you took time writing this (it wasn't just some crap thrown together). The background is perfect! I love the ideas depicted in this. Great job and keep up the good work.

An ideal background for this poem- they fit so well together. I too have felt that way after buying that special poetry book - have a few I look through occasionaly that give me inspiration and ideas -wish there was some way we could all pool our poetry from this site into an AP book - just think of the audience we would have!

A world without books, words, and poetry--a world devoid of printed human emotion, thought, and musing, how sad. I'm glad you found a new "friend" upon those lonely shelves and I'm glad it has provided some inspiration to your pen. It is always a pleasure..here or there I saved your points and came here by your author name so you might receive some more reader response and insight.

    Take Care

Your poem is the very reason I started giving my CD's to Libraries..
I was asked by the Libraries for my
work because so many people wanted Poetry
but there was very little on the shelves.
In the entire place, which is huge, there
was only one row of poetry books.
I would suggest more of the poets here
submit there work in book form to their local libraries.
It could make someone very happy.

Excellent poem. Excellent subject. I enjoyed this.

I really like it, too. It's very interesting. I like the format you put this in and everything else about it. That's a real book, right? If it is, I'll have to check it out.
