Facing Fate

I did not stop the words, but let them fall
To nestle soft on ears, whispers avowed.
They mingled with the promises I vowed;
Each brazen lie now turned to biting gall.
It was important once, if I recall,
to grasp my greedy gains with ferver loud,
(My heart's ambitions, luxuries endowed),
Not pondering the cost that might befall.

And so, I sadly learned I had to pay,
To trade my wicked wrong to righteous right,
And recompense my culpability.
My ego fought suggesting some delay,
Perhaps review affairs that gave delight
And stall the need for my motility.

But no.  The sky in greatness shatters all
My hopes, which like the soft, wind-broken cloud
Lies scattered broad across expanses proud
Of the bright blue.  Oh!  I have known the small
Half truths, but in the search have found a caul
Much thicker than the thin grey shroud
Awaiting me.  My mind cries midst the crowd
To wait alone that one shrill dreaded call.

With tears I know this too will pass away,
For pendulum which swings from dawn to night,
From stimulation to blank tranquility,
Must stop, unwound.  The moment coughs.  I pray.
Let me have peace.  I need no blinding light
To face my fate.  I've found humility.
