Strong Black Man

My name is Cush…
of an African Race.
To protect me from the sun
GOD darkened my face.
My ancestry is larger and wider
than all the desert sands.
My bloodline flows from David;
and my father… was Abraham.
My people roamed freely,
long before Amistad.
I have a blood covenant, with my Lord…
and I am one with my GOD.
So… if, from my presence,
you perceive a glow,
that's just the power within me,
that's making it so.
And if my confidence seems cocky
and arrogant…
well… you just don't understand.
See… I am the definition…
of a strong, black man.

My people created dynasties, long before,
the first European was born.
Their math produced pyramids which have endured
milleniums of sand storms.
Their science and study
produced charts of the stars,
which are still being used…
though they won't say they’re ours.
My people were stripped of their culture
and brought to this land,
with nothing but faith…
and the strength in their hands.
But they still endured!!
And with that kind of blood
coursing through me,
how could I be anything less…
than the strong man you see.

Yea… I know.
Right now, some of you
aren't liking me.
But then… you didn't like Jesus either,
so I'm in good company.
'Cause… see, His blood is the reason,
I can do the things I do.
It's his knowledge and wisdom,
that victoriously gets me through.
It's the power of his Spirit
which strengthens me;
and His promise says
I can be anything…
that he needs me to be.

Yea, I see you out there,
laughing and plotting,
and thinking of ways to bring me down.
But you know,
the more I read God's word,
even a love for you I've found.

So when you come to me
with all the corrupt rules
of society,
and tell me of all
the opportunities I've missed,
and all the political butts
I have to kiss to climb some corporate ladder…
there's something you really,
don't understand.
Through Christ, I hold my future
Within the praises of my hands,
for I am, the definition,
of a Strong Black Man!

  • You speak the truth. This poem had me smiling from ear to ear.
    'My name is Cush…
    of an African Race.
To protect me from the sun
    GOD darkened my face. '

I loved that part. Very inspiring write, I need to show this to my little brothers.

I have to agree with the others who have commented on this poem so far, this piece is not only strong and proud, but gracious, and shows the true essence of what a "strong black man" (I know very few in person) is and should be.

I believe that it takes strong roots in God to be able to bear the kind of oppression we of African descent face every day of our lives. It seems that the 12% of people who are of no "color" (and do not realize that they are far outnumbered) overlook the fact that much of civilization's lessons were perfected in the Motherland (they don't call Africa that for nothing) long before the rise of most other countries. It infuriates me that these mindsets are still so prevalent today. I suppose it will be another 2,000 years before we see any significant change in patterns of thinking.

This piece is inspiring, remarkable. I am abashed to say I have never read any of your works before. These words are a hallmark to be remembered for all time. I applaud you and hope to read more from your intelligent pen in the future.

    Many blessings,

    Raven Aurora

Thank you Raven. I will strive to continue to honor both GOD and my ancestry. You are right about the mindsets but I am either foolish or naive enough to believe that one person can make a difference just like one stream can make a flood. A single voice will ultimately find another and another until a stronger voice is formed and heard and ears are moved and hearts are changed. "It's hard to kick against the prick."

      Thank you for your encouragement.

      One Love,

      John

    My favorite line is....

"My Ancestry is larger and wider
    then all the desert sands
    my bloodline flows from David
    my father...... was Abraham"

Such an awsome poem, filled with the confidence of knowing who you are!
    Exellently penned!

    Exceptional!

I am glad to see secberm came to visit your words. He too is a "Strong Black Man".

The latest poem on my page is in rebuke of the devil that came in my face actually thinking he could harm one of God's "strong Black women" with his trite words.

Everything inspires my muse. You my dear friend have caused quite the roar in my spirit with this poem. Your noble writ is flawless in my eyes. May God keep you forever blessed.

    Much Love ♥
