Ashley

~ Ashley ~

My little baby child

born too early for this world

I looked at you in wonderment

that you ever did survive

Your frail little body

a mere 2 pounds 6 ounces

appearance of an old person

skin and bones and sunken face

I visited you every day

and every day I cried some tears

when I had to leave your side

and you could not come home with me

My beautiful, incredible daughter

today, you are a young woman

ready to experience

all the world has to offer

I have been truly blessed

with your presence in my life

I love you to pieces

I love you whole

~ Mom ~

Author notes

Option #4 - will be adding pictures of her as a preemie and now, but need to scan them first.

Ashley is my daughter, born premature at 2 pounds 6 ounces, almost 18 years ago now.  We have a special thing where one will say, "I love you to pieces," and the other ones says back, "I love you whole."  Whoever starts it always starts with the "I love you to pieces."

Thorin-Ganush - Thank you for the inspiration to write this poem, even if it does not exactly fit the guidelines of option #4 and I carried it on to when I am looking at her now and still seeing that preemie baby.

Its sad, and its hard cause you feel so helpless. Your the parent and suppose to protect your child and sometimes that isnt possible....Im heart felt to this poem cause I care and also because My son was a preemie and everyday I prayed and showed him my love and still do. No one should have to face that situation, like we did. Luv ya tons, amanda

yeah, true, redundant, but just gotta keep repeating the fact that she is little and my baby... Even if she is almost 18... hahaha... Thanks so much for visiting, Thorin-Ganush, and I do hope you enjoy all of your entries! - Kimberly G.

This is beautiful! This poem is so simple, and yet so wonderful! I like that you took the option and slightly modified it. I really like the lines "I love you to pieces/I love you whole", and I like them even more now that I know that they have personal significance. What a sweet thing to say to your daughter! I also liked the line "My little baby child". It's sort of redundant, because all babies are children, but it's redundant in a beautiful way. That line sort of makes your daughter seem smaller, which perfectly fits the poem. Good luck in the contest!

    Well done.

This is a beautiful poem and well written with a mom's love. Having been there, and losing my grandson, I know where you are coming from.

Reeeeeeeeeally? Small world. I have a little bunny rabbit that is about 2lb 3oz and I look at him and it amazes me that my daughter weight just a little more than him when she was born. And, he's got a lot of fuzz, so his "meat" is less than what it appears, and he's so tiny. Holding Ashley, her head could fit in our hand, it was about the size of an orange. It's amazing what they can do to help these babies survive. They stuck a "feeding tube" through a vein in her head to her heart so she would get the nutrition pumped through her quickly. At least that's the way I remember it, it was a long time ago!

When they took her from me C section, they hurried her away, and a nurse stuck her head through the door a few minutes later and said, "doctor, we're losing her." Talk about freaking out! She was talking about another patient, but I thought she was talking about our baby. Someone told me that outside the room the doctor gave her hell and told her to never do that again.
