Don't Trust In God

Don’t tell me what God has done for you,
The Priests and the Angels will testify but I will not.
I have seen the news on the television,
Seen the pain that is dealt, not by God, but by us.

It is our own mess that we are stuck in,
And no amount of make-believe will change it all.
We have to believe in ourselves now,
Not some deity long dead, buried, faded and gone.

I do not need to open my heart to God,
It works fine by its own, I do not need any excuses.
My actions are a part of my identity,
And I will not explain it away as the will of Christ.

It is naïve to trust things in God’s hands,
For when did He last do anything to help, to intervene?
Only we can make our life better,
So why trust in the deity that killed His own son?

Belief can heal but it cannot save,
And God is used too much as a weapon for the vain.
We create our own futures and blessings;
Our lives here are dictated by our own actions, not His.

Author notes

Option 6.

The ironic thing is that I am a Catholic, and I do believe...I just don't think that believing in God is a blessing. At least not nowadays.

Wow...an explosive piece here LOL Not that I expect anything less from you ;-) You always manage to argue viewpoints logically, even on a subject that so many can get too emotionally involved in. I loved the idea of God being an excuse, and you're right, when you start saying that everything is some higher beings will, then you convince yourself that you have no responsibility to try and change the world around you, or even yourself and your life, with is such a dangerous trap for a person to fall into. Wonderful use of language, an emotional poem, and yet not over emotional that it affects the logic of argument. a perfect balance and very brave poem :-)

    What an amazing piece.
"It is our own mess that we are stuck in,
And no amount of make-believe will change it all.
We have to believe in ourselves now,
Not some deity long dead, buried, faded and gone."
So very true, we need to take responsibility for ourselves

I think this poem is wonderfully articulated and filled with emotion and...well, expression. I found myself understanding and agreeing with many points, as I think many do. It's...well, emotional. Emotional and detatched and the same time, and the title works well. A good argument to the question, well executed. Great work, BrokenFiend, as usual!

    Thought Provoking

I see your point and you make it very well. It is said that God gave us free will. What we choose is entirely up to us. Someone recently said they were not going to have a necessary surgery because "God will provide." Poor man, I can admire his strength of conviction, but not his choice. I think it was Abigail VanBuren who said something to the effect that God gave her the brains and energy to tackle her own problems and she didn't expect Him to cater to her every whim. She did not expect God to hand her everything on a silver platter, she could work for it herself. This must be an interesting contest, best wishes.

not to rant against you in any way or preach or condemn, but i think God gave us free will and it's people that are corrupt, not God. although it does tempt me to rage about why he isn't doing anything drastic about it, but i believe punishment will come for the jerks making this life miserable. as for your views on religion, maybe you should check out some different ones cuz there are many decent ones out there that can help. personally, i'm muslim, (not a terrorist). im not trying to convert you or anything, so don't worry, just saying that religion does help as much as i sometimes hate to admit. but on some level, i agree with you. i'll restrain myself from going into my novel length philosophical mode. anyway, the poem is definately thought-provoking, so good job at distracting me from trig homework.

    Very Good

This is a very good poem. I enjoyed this piece very much. What if though God created everything and then left it in our hands to do with as we see fit. Not everyone accepts responsibility for what they do and those are usually the ones who say it was God's will. Think about one thing God did not kill his son we did. Good Luck.

I don't think it is wise to trust God. Fear God, perhaps love God; but never trust God. Most of our destiny I believe is handed to us by our environment. The rest we may decide.

Of all the emotions released from Pandoras box, Hope was the worst. Hope provides for us the basis for modern religion. Prayer shold be called Divine wishes. There is nothing there but responsibility for our actions.

Wow. I agree with what you're saying here. Especially right now. This was a great read. I also think that believing in God isn't a blessing anymore. This world has changed. Great Write. Much love.

the fact that you are a catholic blows my mind, because these thoughts are dangerously on the atheistic. and that's cool- because i definitely don't believe in a god personally, but this just makes this an altogether more impressive piece on so many levels. your honesty and bravery to speak like this are pretty amazing. i am giving you applause not only for the great write, but for the open-mindedness you have that not many people do. great job here.
