The Question Why

Look around you, see the signs;
Hate is spreading, hate survives,
And all the World leaders fight and fight,
But who stops and questions why?

Why must we risk our lives?
Why must our brother do and go?
Why does war breed more hate,
And no one stops to question why?

I’ve seen children cry,
And people die,
On the television set.
I watch the evening news,
And what news
Do we get in our homes?
“More people died today.
More people cried today.”

Terrorists spread fear and hate,
But the allies do the same
As they bomb their children and homes
No one stops and questions why.

Preachers’ talk of the afterlife,
While people in this world dies,
From lack of food, of medicine,
But do we stop and question why?

I hear mothers cry,
And soldiers’ die
In muddy battlefields.
No place is ever safe,
Not yesterday,
Or today, or tomorrow.
More people died today,
And I cried today.

There is no answer for the pain,
No cure to cleanse the shame away,
We are all guilty for spreading the hate and lies,
But we have stopped and question why.

Maybe someday we’ll be safe,
And everyone will live again,
But not before we all stop, think and act,
And ask the question: “why do we hate?”

Author notes

I'm no James Blunt. I love the song 'No Bravery' and I guess in a sense I wanted this to have that feeling...just me venting really.

    "hate survives."

this is really sharp and still kind of sad and sot at the same times, if that makes sense.

I really liked this...and I think you should too, it has the feel that you were hoping for :-) It's a poem that is so relevant now...really, it's a poem of our time. That's what our time will be unfortunately, when they look back, I suspect our time in history will be known as a time of terror...both from terrorist threat and the actions of governments who decide that war is somesort of an answer. It is still beyond me how a governement can claim a moral highground against terrorists that bomb cities when they do exactly the same to the middle east. Like you, I have no sympathy for terrorists, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't question our own governments actions just as critically. To be honest, I'm sick and tired of this bloody mess, and it seems to me we're just heading for one big stalemate. A very well expressed poem...well done :-)

    Amazing

Eloquent and elegant as always. You repeatedly pose the question "But do we stop and question why?" It is sad that most people do not step back and think about things they are doing, from their actions to harsh words. Blessings hun.

I've heard a bit of James Blunt, but I never heard "No Bravery". What I get from this though is utter frustration with the direction humanity is taking these days. I agree, hate seems to be growing, and it makes me sad. I hope writing this at least made you feel better.

    Good luck in the contest.

Venting is good - get's it out and not festering deep inside. Easy to read and understand the sentiments you express so well in these lines. War will never stop because there are always people who hate, just because they can. Liked this write.

Indeed a great thought with so much intensity and with so much depth as well..The thoughts here have raised certain universal concept in question to provok the thoughts of every one of us and that is the strength of this work ...

    Heartbreaking

Some excellent questions and your poem is heartfelt and true. War, hatred, fear of anything or anyone different from ourselves has always existed and I don't see an end in sight. Human nature is both fascinating and frightening. As a Marine Mom, yes I would cry...no, no one forces him to go, he volunteers. So many complex issues, but don't forget the soldier who puts his life on the line so a tragedy like 9/11 won't happen again.

    Very Good

Very passionate piece about a good question. The answer would not help because there will always be war, hate, famine, and death. If we knew the answer the only thing it would change is that we would know why for a change. Very good work and good luck in the contest.

No need to compare yourself to James Blunt, the feel is definetely here. I have thought the same things...and indeed "Why do we hate?". Though even if we knew why...I doubt it would ever end. Thanks for entering, best wishes

    Excellent

Why do we hate? Is it hate or is it fear? We fear what we do not understand and some people translate that into hate. Some people think they have to be in control of everything they touch and if they can not control it then they begin to fear and yes hate it so feel they must destroy it. Great poem, it makes people think.

Can't we create a real world? A world based on rational thought and behavior? You've hit upon some crucial observations that will define this generation.

    Superb/Intriguing/Unique

And a very good 'vent', it is. I liked the way you expressed yourself and find it very strange that there is no nation wide protest over this unjust war, like their was with Nam. Why can't everyone one just share the worlds resources w/o killing others just to get more of them. And killing others in the name of any religion, I think, is both foolish and stupid.
    When will the hate stop??

    excellent work

excellent piece i feel for the ones who have to live in fear and typically that does not fall on our soil but when it does that is why we fight back and sometime the blood spilled is our loved one but they do this in protection of what we do have and sometimes it seems wrong but hey they made achoice and they knew the results could be costly believe me they are scared and confused as well but they do what they feel is right

    good

The actions of humanity are, indeed, frustrating ,not to mention being inexpicable. The question to the question "Why we hate?" is obvious. It is the undebatable nature of the human from time immemorial. Change the nature, change the motivation, and you change the behavior. It does happen, but too few are willing to seriously consider the cure: spiritual rebirth in Jesus Christ. It does happen.

If I remember correctly, the Salem Witch Trials started because one little girl lied...I have no sympaty for terrorists, but neither do I have for world leaders who decide that carpet bombing people is an answer to anything.

    nice effort

well a good answer for you may lay within the past.
I sugest you watch the movie Three sovergiens for sarah.
It was filmed in the 80's. It is on the salem witch trials,
though the answers it offers could also be applied to your question. Just remember, They bombed us, and it could happen again.. --Robert
