Don’t send me lilies
with their fragrance of death
wrapped in each silken petal and leaf.
Don’t send me poppies
torn from the field of war
and red with the blood of the fallen.
Don’t send me orchids
with their corruption of rust
to remember pain gained from innocence.
Don’t send forget-me-nots
trodden underfoot
their colours trampled, along with dreams.
Don’t send me roses
to be captured by their thorns
and ensnared in their web of deception.
Don’t send sunflowers
or daisies in full bloom
reminders of misspent youth.
Don’t send flowers at all
if you love me as you say
bring me carnations – and stay.
Please tell me what you think

this reminds me of what is lost on the eve of war or how we feel has some have lost much in the name of war.
Keep penning on one stroke at a time!
