The Funny Thing About Pregnancy

Isn't it funny
how the moment you become pregnant
your belly is public domain?
People go around patting it
like it's not a part of you..
Just some fascinating accessory.

You'll get all the advice
you could ever need..
..and a lot of advice you don't.
Just filter through it and
take what you want,
motherhood is learn as you go.

Pregnancy is a roller coaster of emotions.
Hold on tight and
get ready for the ride.
One moment Dr. Jekyll,
the next it's Mrs. Hyde

In the last few months
there is so much movement.
The rolling, the kicking,
a shot to the ribs.
It feels like a party inside..
....a very WILD party.

Yes, it can be crazy,
but it also brings great joy,
to know you have this special power
You can give life....
You get to be Mom....
You are the most important person in the world to that child....

What a blessing!!!

Author notes

I am not pregnant right now, but I have been 5 times before. What a beautiful roller coaster!!

"One moment Dr. Jekyll, kthe next it's Mrs. Hyde"~I had to laugh at that, b/c it's soooo true. Our poor husbands, they deserve some type of reward for the things we put them through with our ups and downs. You are so right in saying that once that belly sticks out, it's like no one can talk to you without first patting-sometimes I wanted to reach right out and pat their tummies, too.
You did an excellent job on this entry-you mixed humor with reality and tied it up nicely with the sentimental ribbon of love. Best wishes~vj

Thank you so much for your kind and humorous comments. It's funny how all pregnant women can relate because it's so much the same for all in these ways. I got a chuckle out of the fact that you wanted to pat some of their bellies back, because I was thinking that they would be appalled and maybe even disturbed by it, but nobody seem s to think that pregnant women care. Hahaha!! Thanks for your comment!!

I am glad I checked out your work. This poem is amazing and so true; though I have never been pregnant. My cousin has and when I would walk with her, people would stop us to pet her like a puppy and tell her really long stories.xD In other words: Amazing poem. You are an amazing artist with words.

    Accessorised with Love

A very amusing poem which contains much truth. It's a long time since my wife was pregnant, but one of my male "friends" had the effrontery to say that he would need longer arms to dance with her. He soon realised his rather tactless error and turned up the next evening, very shamefaced, with a large bouquet of flowers! Served him blooming well right. A blessed time indeed, and a lovely piece of writing. Best Wishes.

I felt like this with my pregnancy about 5 years back ... it was all "Oh let me feel him move" ...
and the endless advice, half which I didn't need -lol - drove me bonkers ...
Of course mine didn't end well but ... nonetheless ...

    A beautiful write
I wish you the best of luck in the contest

This is funny to read -- it reminds me of my pregnancies in the US where this was so common and then the one in Germany where no one ever touched my belly or acted like it was special at all. Luckily, they all did beam into the baby carriage though. It was as good as having a dog. LOL.

Different cultures do treat pregnancy differently, but I think nobody can look into the eyes of a baby and not smile. I think they see this precious pure child, and they have no defenses, because babies have no guile. They are genuine. Thank you for commenting on my poem.

This is such a fun poem in a sense that you showed a good humorous side as well as showing the honest part of it, too. I like how you were able to bring the two together so well! That first paragraph really had me smiling because if everybody was touching your belly any other time, it wouldn't be handled so well. It would be annoying and well...odd! You put this together really well...right down to the title. Excellent.

Your thought is true about the fact that at any other time, people touching your belly would be considered rude and creepy. I'm glad you saw the humour in it and also got a taste for what a special gift it is. Thanks for reading!!

A tribute to expectant mothers everywhere!

Too bad fathers don't carry children so the task could be approached in a more logical, less emotional fashion to eliminate the roller coaster. Do you not agree? Fortunately we are still able to advise and coach the female. Should you or any other decide to become involved in further pregnancies I have a great wealth of wisdom to impart. www.drjadon.com
I like the Dr. Jeckyl, Mrs Hyde comparison and the "WILD party" inside. I recall one of my sons demanding so much room and moving, punching, gouging so much that I was afraid he would break one of his Mom's ribs. Her belly seemed the size of an exercise ball.
Your final verse is beautiful and the truth of it will be recognized by everyone who takes a moment to reflect upon their mother, Those nine months the mother and child spend together although uncomfortable for the mother are a very special time in their lives, even given the "roller coaster". Good write from a young mother of experience.

Dr. Jadon eh?? That's funny. I don't know if the comment about men being more logical would be true or not. It changes your hormones, so technically this might mean that men would be emotional wrecks as well, haha!! That's a funny one to picture..a pregnant man blubbering about how big his belly is getting and about how nobody understands how he is feeling (also a terribly disturbing thought). Anyways, thanks for your amusing comment.

Good point, about the hormones. Perhaps it might be better if we leave things as they are. women will continue to be emotional wrecks and men will continue to provide much needed advise and wisdom.

I know I'm drawing a very long bow here, but I can understand those mixed emotions. My share was fatherhood, which comes with a measure of guilt and pride, but when those anguished moments pass, we share the emotion and the pride, all else fades into obscurity.
