The Answer Is Love

Am I a fool for loving you?
is what I want so hard to do?

My compass leads me to your heart,
defies the miles that we’re apart

The phone calls make it all so real,
and help to fill that void I feel

But there you are and here I am
and there’s our love, this hologram

Love has no rules,
none of us have the map
A minefield for fools,
such a sweet and tender trap

But when the odds are stacked against you,
And circumstances do you in,
No matter how you frame the question,
The answer is love

The answer is love,
love is always the answer
The answer is love,
love is always the key
The answer is love,
love is always the answer
The answer for you,
the answer for me

So give me reasons to believe,
in this love we both conceive

The thought of us just feels so right,
brings tender dreams into my night

So take my hand and lead the way,
Faith hold my heart throughout the day

And I’ll just keep on loving you
it’s what I want so much to do

The answer is love,
love is always the answer
The answer is love,
love is always the key
The answer is love,
love is always the answer
The answer for you,
the answer for me

Author notes

Long distance relationships are one of the more challenging ways to be in love. I had written this song while still in Hong Kong with half my heart in Indy the other half somewhere in between. Many struggles to maintain that sense of connection and in the final analysis feel like a casualty but still...For me love is like a natural spring that oozes from the side of some verdant mountain. Plug it up and it will merely find another way to flow out somewhere else. Life is too short to become jaded over love that did not work out. For me the answer is love.

Beautiful, as always. I particularly enjoyed the 'my compass leads me to your heart, defies the miles that we're apart' - for me it was a clever expression of the natural power of love, the inevitability of the soul seeking love, the no matter how far, there you are aspect of love. A lovely image. And then you say, 'and there's our love, this hologram'which, given the distance between you and your loved one, so succinctly imparts the bright, colourful intangibility of your love - you reach out, but your arms encounter thin air, even if you sometimes feel so closely linked by your love. I also liked the plea for faith to hold your hand and lead the way, you know it feels right, but sometimes at such a distance you need a little extra help to reaffirm your instinct. And the repetition of the chorus love is the answer.. is also your reaffirmation of love. Takes me back to the times I waited with longing for short, sweet, satellite-delayed ship calls from the one I loved on the far side of the world. And now your certainty that love is both the key and the answer gives my own present and future renewed hope that I will one day find love again. ( I hate to disagree with brian, but I do: I think you say it better than Lennon & McCartney!) thank you

This is such a beautiful song! I can so hear you singing it in my head. Hopefully it will be on the next cd you put out.

I have lived the long distance relationship. Six year worth, unfortunately he was married, and while not a surprise, I discovered that no matter the heart strings that are plucked, reality finally changes the tuning of the strings.

Very well written... flowed just like the song it is.

    Hugs..

Love for me has become something that i can almoast touch..but not hold, that i can dream of..but im just not able to fill the gap between our souls between our hearts so we can be happy for all time.

"But when the odds are stacked against you,
    And circumstances do you in,
No matter how you frame the question,
    The answer is love"

these lines gave me some hope..for a tiny moment anyway..but hope is allllll iv got right now im afraid. This is a great write..thank you

I love the lines "My compass leads me to your heart,
defies the miles that we’re apart"...I think if it's true love, the feelings transcend the miles...tho that can be very frustrating, being that we need the physical contact so much as humans, still, when it goes as deep as the soul, nothing is stronger than that...a beautifully written piece Henri...and I agree with you, Love is THE answer to a LOT of questions!!!

Looks like I got here late. Even Sabur beat me. But I would just like to say something about this subject, as I have been in a long distance relationship, or I should say I was, for about two years, and it had its moments of sheer wonder. The sad part was they were not often enough, it was difficult to arrange schedules sometimes, and not alot can be built together with thousands of miles between us. But I'd do it again, I think, in the blink of an eye, because those feelings I had, knowing he loved me and that he thought about me daily and missed me terribly, remembering how my breath caught a bit when I heard his voice on the phone, feeling his arms when we finally were together again, I can't put a value on that. I would do it again, knowing it might not last. But I would be hoping every day and every night that it would.

It is what I believe we are born to do. Love..in it's purest form..that holds no restrictions but frees us.
This really spoke to me, Henri. It spoke volumes. Beautifully written, introspective.
    Thank you for sharing.

    Brilliant

Henri, what a lovely, lovely poem/song! It was so thought provoking - distance tests that aspect of love which is timeless and eternal.

For me love is a private (and not necessarily a mutual) feeling. I do not have to possess a diamond to admire its beauty. I do not have to buy a piece of land in order to be left breathless by its vistas. I do not have to be loved in order to love. The admiration itself gives me "ownership" ... But to be in love with a soul mate, now THAT is another story! Whether this beloved is with you or thousands of miles away, does not matter in the least:

"My compass leads me to your heart,
defies the miles that we’re apart "

I love to dream; I dream myself an Ideal (NOT an IDOL - there is a vast difference!) and then I react as if in relation to that Ideal ... I find that it nourishes my soul and it makes me more tolerant of any barriers like time and distance. The more you treat your beloved in accordance with your dream, the more that person reacts to your love in accordance with your needs. I believe that man is a co-worker within the sacred Plan of Divinity - one has to be sensitive and aware, in order to see the cause, the course and the effect.

"The thought of us just feels so right,
brings tender dreams into my night"

Thank you for sharing a wonderful vision with us. This poem uplifted my soul.

    Warmest Regards,

    Myra

This piece just reached into my heart and SQUEEZED! There are so many beautiful words and lines here...i wouldn't be able to pick a favorite. Very true...long distance love can be such a challenge...but believing in love makes it all worthwhile. Our hearts don't know the difference between love down the street and love miles away...our heart just knows what it feels. And love is love is love...no matter where that love resides.

I've had the experience of love from a distance, and found that it wasn't my answer...but I also discovered it wasn't love.

Your words here are beautiful, and I agree w/Maureen...they need to be sung.

The internet has made it so easy for me to stay in touch with my friends in New York, now that I have moved to California, but I could not imagine maintaining a long distance love relationship... when I was a truck driver and I was only home with my husband about four days a month... it was very hard, but also very rewarding.

lol to SaBUr....indeed, what is the question...what's the line from that cool, weird movie, Adaptations... I saw...'you are what you love, not what loves you'...(and ain't that a good thing too..eh, maybe...)

and there’s our love, this hologram ...yes, Hen..that's it.

    just love this...love, love, love...

Truly Beautiful!!!!! I know how much of a challenge the long-distance relationship can be, my husband and I started out that way, and yes it's tru what they say, "absence makes the heart grow fonder" We just celebrated our 2 year wedding anniversary,so I do believe * The Answer Is Love*

I read Gozling's poem first, where she responded to this one, so I'm so glad I came to read this, I'll be back:)

    Take care,

I'm reminded of the beatles song "all you need is love" -

"There's nothing you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be - It's easy.

All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love.
    Love is all you need."

You said it just as well ... just figured I'd post a little of the song ... great work Henri! ~ brian

Henri - This poem touched home for me. I’ve had two long distance relationships, one of which actually worked (I married the poor bugger). You are right - the distance is very painful and distracting and places a lot of stress on the relationship, but it is exciting and beautiful at the same time. This is a lovely poem, filled with melancholy and an ardent belief in love. I thoroughly enjoyed this piece and your words. Thank you - Helen

P.S. I know I’m showing my age here, but this poem reminds me of the England Dan & John Ford Coely song "Love Is the Answer" - I love their music. Please forgive the tangent - being a musician, I thought you'd appreciate the compliment...

    Some tides
    are so low...
    I wonder how
    they ever make it back....

    a manhood wedded
    to something
    intangeble is
    irretrievably lost....

    i let shore waters
    lap over my toes
    a familiar shape
    washes up
    within the incoming tide
    when i run
    to touch
    you are washed within
    away...

    I'll never
    lose my love
    waiting for the waters
    to subside
    while only a
    smooth surface
    of wet sands
    remain

    The beach is made
    remade
    so many times
    in a day

    redrawn

    sands cover
    uncover
    rocks
    thick fists of gray
    roll in and away

    the sea borrows the sands
    while they
    take all the time
    trying to survive

    poverty of the heart
    makes one clever

    I am a woman
    with ingenuity
    without illusion
    yet with full
    conclusion

Love is the answer and if its true, not the passage of time, nor distance can diminish it.

    Love is the answer
    to questions we've asked
    Love is the key
    to doors long since past
Love is heart, the core of eternity
and its all we'll have left
    once we're faced with infirmity

    Love and light,

Wonderful expression as ever...so much depth of feeling in it...
isn't easy when the odds are stacked against you...but all we can do is try I suppose and let the path lead us where it may....

Hope all works out for you both....:)

    Excellent! Enjoyed the read!

I once had someone who was in love with me say that he enjoyed time away from me because he loved thinking about me. I had mixed feelings about what he said. I think he was "in love with love" and not with me. That often happens with long distance relationships. Our imagination sees things ideally and we love what we see.

I loved your poem...great lyrics for a song!

Just a suggestion: But when the odds are stacked against you, and you feel you just can't win, no matter how you frame the question, the answer can be found within (something like that). It's the only stanza that doesn't rhyme!
