A Lesson from the Ant

Missing image
A little slumber; A little rest
A little folding of the hands
Perhaps I should get undressed
Perhaps I should make some plans

I thought for a while what I should do
But that made me too tired
Thinking and planning is for the fool
I decided it was time that I retired

A little sleep just for a while
I care to do little else today
Dreams will bring me a smile
I'll have some energy after I lay

The world makes too many demands
More idle time is what is best
A little folding of the hands
A little slumber; A little rest

In my dreams I heard a speech
Watch the ant you sluggard
I saw them carry sand from the beach
They toiled and never loitered

They seemed satisfied and strong
I wondered why I was empty and sad
I saw their days never seemed long
I found that I wanted what they had

I awoke from my dream and wondered
What is it that brings satisfaction
A loud cry in my soul thundered
Contentment requires action

I rose knowing I must do what I dread
I put my feet to the ground
I stood up and got out of bed
I did not understand the joy I had found

I began to work; I began to toil
I grew neither tired or weary
I had planted seeds within my soil
And found my life fruitful and cheery

Author notes

The lesson of the ant is to the person who's sin is sloth referred to as the sluggard in the Bible

Proverbs 6:6 - 11

6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!

7 It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,

8 yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
When will you get up from your sleep?

10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest-

11 and poverty will come on you like a bandit
and scarcity like an armed man. [a
