Not long ago I was a freed man
No longer would I listen to their demand
And with this freedom came a sense of pride
But now my freedom has been denied
I roam the lands looking for work
But all the white men are being such jerks
Nowhere to sleep, no food to eat
I was a freed man; I am completely beat
The Jim Crow era was of the bleakest times
Though the fair skinned men seemed not to mind
Segregation, the black code laws
These were more than tiny flaws
I need my freedom, equality too
But what about it can I do?
I’m just one man, colored at that
To them I’m nothing more than a rat
Nothing but the clothes on my back
My life’s more like fiction than actual fact
I’m dying here, how can this be?
Not long ago I was set free
Author notes
Mines for Social Studies too, like Megan's.
