Feet On The Roof

You old corn, you!

You get me to dance on the phone
like early days when my dress was short
and butterscotch lipstick light

I want to leave the kitchen alone
while searching for a stage
that has a spotlight on my toes.

Your gravel voice is a sure prompt
to gather my teenage toys and play
the records of Rydell and Ed Byrnes.

Suddenly, I’m like cheese on crackers
sappy and gummy in presentation
but approved by all.

You old corn, you!

Keep the words coming,
my hem is getting shorter
and feet are skating on the roof.

M. Dianne Berry

Beautifully written - laden with the evocative imagery of luscious nostalgia - dancing its words as a flattered pulse races. The bookend stanzas capture the whole perfectly - a true poetic delight!

Embarrasing sassy fun loving mother and devoted wife all in. A lovely fun piece you've written. So natural and easy speak it reads, like it flowed from the pen! Beautiful!

Feet are skating on the roof, and if..., it could all just be the same, the last dance and the faceless names, it would all be good today. I have many days gone by, I have many loves gone dry, and feet that danced so many nights that wear my clothes I left behind. Those clothes have gathered moss, like friends whom I have lost, but you bring them back to me. Thanks for opening my closet. RC

Lol... I love this, Dianne And funny coincedence regarding the cheese and crackers. Last night I started writing a poem about my first husband and I and a situation in our young married years... a little recollection of being broke and pretending cheese and crackers was meat and potatoes. I'll post it today sometime probably.

Your poem is wonderful, Sis. Isn't it fun when we can live in the past for those few moments.

    Beautiful nostalgia

Hey, Kookie, lend me your comb. Or should I say Cookie? You never cease to amaze. Like some crazy time machine you send me back to summers and sweeter days of carhops and Coke glasses (we used to stick them in the glove box when no one was looking) and "duck and cover" and saying things like "Daddyo," with a perfectly straight face. And malts and flat tops and deuce coupes and BMOC's and duck tails and penny loafers and bobby socks and . . . oh dear, I date myself.

Beautiful work, beautifully written with such loving care and attention to detail. I'm stunned again.
