She lived in the valley below the hill,
A town in the dark, dead and dreary.
To the lifeless, she sold a passing thrill
Leaving her empty weak and weary.
Alone she’d cry tears of shame
After each night of giving pleasure
To men who never knew her name,
Men who traded her body for treasure.
Every night she would glance outside
Up to the hill where she’d see a light.
Feeling fear and conviction, she’d hide
Retreating back into the darkness of night.
Rumors and stories passed through her walls
Of those who escaped up the lighted hill.
Whispers of hope echoed within her halls
Life near the light promised to fulfill.
Shadows beckoned and pleaded her to stay.
Promise of pleasure enslaved her to shame.
As the light continued to beckon to day,
Deceit dissuaded, "You’ll always be the same."
More nights failed to satisfy.
Pleasure faded to almost nil.
Life in the dark was less of a high.
Greater was the call to climb the hill.
Falling to the lowest point in the valley,
She clearly could see the light.
Mustering all the courage she could rally,
She limped away from the night.
From the foot, she started to climb.
A friend reached down and took her hand,
Washed away all her filth and grime,
Then carried her up the hill to a bright new land.
A town in the dark, dead and dreary.
To the lifeless, she sold a passing thrill
Leaving her empty weak and weary.
Alone she’d cry tears of shame
After each night of giving pleasure
To men who never knew her name,
Men who traded her body for treasure.

Author notes
2. "You are the world's light - a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see. Don't hide your light! Let it shine for all; let your good deeds glow for all to see, so that they will praise your Heavenly Father." Matthew 5: 15-16

wow...this is so heartwarming...I loved how you end the piece...the first parts are truly sad but the ending is truly touching as the woman finally saw the light...indeed we all should be the 'light' to those who need us...thank you for sharing this fantastic write...

Beautiful piece. I must admit, it's rather hard (content-wise) to read, but well-worth it for the end result.

this is sad to the end as she had a prince charming to rescue her nice ending to a sad story, good luck in this contest,
