you'd take me everywhere
to you I was your only friend
protected you in the dark
lit the way when you were scared
your parents always said
god is with you
never fear the dark.
but still you were afraid
and I helped you ease that fear
you’d hold me tight
you'd cry when you were frightened
you loved me.

you got bigger
and I stayed the same.
your friends laughed at me
said I was for babies
you threw me against the wall
you started hitting me
you'd cry because your boyfriend left
and you'd tear my stitches out
my fluff flew all over
why would you do this to me
I was your favorite.

when you realized what you had done.
my one arm on the floor
you picked me up and hugged me
you whispered I’m sorry
you took me to your car

you set me in the seat.
we drove to the park
where we had met
you got out and took me with you
you had tears in your eyes

why would you do this
why would you leave me here
aren't I your favorite still
you laid me down under the slide
and you got back into the car and drove off

I laid under the slide
wondering why you would do this
I felt a cold nose touch me.
fangs that dug into me
the foul breath of a human dog
he carried me
and dropped me in the mud
I laid there feeling cold and wet.

couldn't you see how much I needed you
like you use to need me?
the rain came in
it covered me in water
seasons changed and still there I was

who would love this stuffed bear
now that I was so dirty
who would hold me close now
now that I’m no longer your favorite?
