A Reply to Emily Dickinson

"We never know how high we are
Till we are called to rise;
And then, if we are true to plan,
Our statures touch the skies."

~ Emily Dickinson ~

Dear Emily, I write to say

that - having read the news today -

whilst I applaud your poetry

I question how you view

the average person, such as me

(if not the likes of you)

that, when we're challenged, we may rise

in growing stature to the skies

when, oh my dear, I think

that when the props of everyday

by Fate's swift hand are knocked away

you'd be appaled how - to survive -

our decencies will take a dive

and to what depths we'll sink.

  • I like the style of writing, and also what you have to say. It's funny, though, that while claiming to be plain folk, you have produced quite a lofty piece. Thanks for entering and good luck in my contest!
  • Seems to me there might have been more decency in Emily's day and in Amherst. In reality, Emily led a rather narrow life though she did seem to know about things instinctively.

    An interesting and thoughtful write.

  • Congrats ...

and you took an interesting slant to her thoughts!

I'm Nobody! Who are you? (260)
    by Emily Dickinson

    I'm Nobody! Who are you?
Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there's a pair of us?
    Don't tell! they'd advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!
    How public – like a Frog –
To tell one's name – the livelong June –
    To an admiring Bog!

Wow. This piece is clever, and it gave me a laugh at the same time.
It is very hard to survive life sometimes, and it does feel like we're always sinking.

    Thanks for your entry

A clever and articulate (and humorous) riposte to Emily's somewhat rosy view of human nature--well done.

  • That is BLOODY good!

The news is certainly filled with a lot of sinking, but then I get to read poets such as yourself, well risen
