Under the Old Oak

The only thing
that marks
your final resting place,

an old oak tree.

no stone with a name,
no dates of any kind-

I sit under that oak
and wonder...

who you were,
young and foolish,
just starting your life,

or if you had lived
a full life,
and raised a family?

if there is anyone
that remembers the
stories that you once knew?

if anyone stops by
and talks things over
with you...

if someone tells you
they miss you
and they love you.

so that you're never
alone or forgotten,

I'll stop by,
from time to time,
if you don't mind,

to ask your advice
when life makes no sense,
and tell you about
my hopes and dreams.

I'll call you "my friend"
'cause I don't know your name,
and I'll tell you
I love you,
so you know someone cares.

so my friend,
until the next time,
I love you,
and remember,
I'll be back again
sometime soon...

Author notes

My husband and I are caretakers for the cemetaries in the town of Harrisville, where he grew up, and the other day he was telling me about some unmarked graves over there, and I got to thinking about them...

Who they are...

Wow.....this is a Theme which I have not seen.....such passionate promise in your voice, and the Tone sets me below the Oak, as I watch you tinker in the grass ~

Maybe we should place a marker on this place of rest.......maybe you should ask the Oak who lays beneath your feet ~

I'm surprised this did not win something....Grrr ~

Uncle Bear luvs ya...God bless you!

    Sadly Beautiful

    Words are forgotten
Bodies melt in the arms of Mother Nature
    Heart goes to sleep
    Mind stops to breathe
    Only memories stay behind
In the the hearts still beating

    Now all we need
is a little time to spend
once again, to let the ones gone
    they are still missed
    Until we shall meet again
for another round of soulful life

...Lord rest their souls in peace
    And blessed be their families

Great write as always babe... it reminds me of when ever I pass cemetery or cremation ground, often think don't know whom did they leave behind in tears - & always say 2 lines - Lord rest their soul in peace & bless their families. You've got a beautiful heart and soul which is obvious from your soulful poetry. Always a pleasure to read your words... take care - Loveya Minoo

  • Fantastic. This is so well written! It touched me too, my dad's sister died when she was 4, and her grave is unmarked and I always wonder what will happen when my grandparents are dead and no one goes to visit or even knows where she is. Its a tender thought to think that perhaps a stranger will go visit and talk to her while we are so far away.
    Great Write!

    Very thoughtful piece indeed.
I think you have a typo here in the line below though.

    if there is anyone
    that remembers the
    stories that you one knew?

I think you meant "once knew?"

You sure are named right sweet soul, please shine on!
Peace to you and yours, Timothy aka poeticweaver~

    Just Beautiful

You know I put Matt's ashes under a 300 year old Oak tree with a swing. Oh this poem is just beautiful and I to go there in a different yet the same way for he shall not be forgotten and I can go there and talk to him when I'm at that Ranch. I so love you.

  • Honoring the dead

Awww it is sad when people are just forgotten. We honor those who lived, past and future. Love is universal.

  • It does make you wonder, doesn't it? This is off topic, but I went to Gettysburg, PA a fe years ago and I remember rows and rows of unnamed soldiers and it just amazed me...stories and names lost. It's so sad...Truly a touching read, Mom. I'm off to read the next 2.

  • SUCH CARING PEOPLE MAKE FINE CARETAKERS, TO SAY THE LEAST!

These OLD OAK pieces are the best that I have seen from you since I can't remember when as they are filled with emotion, compassion, and true love, my friend - and with a simple ray of sunshine - coming from you, as always! Who are they - is a good question to ask BUT and even better one - to an old fellow like me any way - is 'WHAT HAVE THEY BECOME?
    Peace & Love!
    Earl.

  • Nice job. I like the calm sense of wonderment. It is nice to think that someone in an unmarked grave would be cared about.
