A poetic response to another poet..

Missing image
you shouldn't judge
what you don't know.
You have no clue,
what hurts them so,
to drive them to slash,
and gash their skin,
it's not a game,
their hope is dim,
it's the only way
some know to cope,
they feel lost,
like their is no hope.
They cut and burn to
let go of pain,
they love the razor
because it eases their pain.
They dont do it for your eyes,
they do it , to cover their lies,
of a happy home,
or smiles that aren't real,
they simply cut so they don't feel.
you said your angry, and tired of their writes,
but then you aren't the one who fights their fight.
There is much pain the reins with in,
they cut themselves
to cover others sin...

Author notes

another poet wrote about how they are sick of reading poems about poeople cutting and harming themself..this is my response. also, if you research the topic , most cutters suffer severe chronic depression, and cutting is also very diagnostic of previous abuse..you shouldn't judge others on something you have not experienced. Abuse is a life long pain..even on your good days, parts of you hurt..and cutting is just a misguided attempt to mask that pain..

Please tell me what you think

  • This is the truth and oh so fucking true for those people and writers here who judge and hate, they don't even know and they don't have a fucking clue how hard it is to feel hopelessness...

I understand what you mean. There are bona fide cutters out there, and no one should judge them. However, with all that "emo" trend crap circulating among the world's youth, there ARE people who only cut for attention, not to alleviate pain, like it's some sort of game to garner attention or to make themselves appear "deeper." Real cutters don't advertise their pain or announce it like it makes them cool. It's one thing to post an honest poem admitting your shame at self-harming, but it's another to brag about it on your profile page.

Just my two cents, as the old cliche goes.

A few years ago when I was a Greeter before I became a Moderator on AP I used to think pretty much as you say the other poet did. I got so tired of having to read so many new poets poems about cutting. Then one day in our local newspaper there were some articles about this problem of cutting. I read all of them and by the time I finished, I had a whole different attitude about cuttings and reasons for it. Many schools, realizing the need, have counseling for cutters.

I realized that it is a real problem and for the most part, misunderstood. Your piece here speaks strongly of the need for understanding and compassion for the ones afflicted with this form of welf abuse.

A good write and I hope more people read it.

  • very well written. and it's so true.
it's too hard of a struggle for people
to judge when they don't understand.

  • Right on, sis! Well written!

You know that I am not a cutter myself, but my heart goes out to all who are. You are right...abuse is a lifelong pain. Even on the good days it is always there in the background somewhere, however faint it may be. We all express, and cope, with our pain in different ways.

Unless you have been through it, you cannot possibly know what it is like and what an intense struggle it can be.

I am glad that you wrote a response. I hope that person sees it and is able to gain some understanding.

agree...judging is the right of God not human - with exception if it is against law -
their hope is dim,...yeah they need extra love to make their hope high.
just remember that you are loved at least by one, God Almighty

  • I completely agree!!!
This is very insightful to those who feel they have the right to judge or criticize those who cut or write about cutting!!
    Loved this!!
Hopefully people get the message from this!

  • I like this!!! this is a plain example of people speaking of things that they don't know about. It's easy to sit and judge others but if the shoe was on the other foot it would definately be a different story.
