Empty

Silent solitude just before dawn.

Another holiday will soon be gone.

Great joy they sometimes say,

Reserved for many on such days.

Yet fearful tidings visit some people,

And what is missing, less than peaceful.

Discontentment not arisen,

From sheer displeasure at what was given,

But at another empty chair.

More space around us, we now aware,

Revealing one less gift, unable to bear.

A more valuable price could never be paid,

For that hollow space where once we played.

That sole presence on

Which we did depend.

Never came back this year again.

Author notes
