On The Shelf

There once was a child who always failed
in every attempt he became derailed
the simplest things in life were too tough
try as he might, his efforts, just not enough

All the children made fun of him each day
his only consolation was to stop and pray
He'd ask the Lord to give him strength and abilities
and someone to guide him through life's difficulties

Then one fateful day, there was a knock at the door
police took his parents, they weren't coming home anymore
a lady placed the battered boy in the back of a van
said, "you'll not be hurt again by that woman or man."

The child sat quietly, scared and ashamed
sure that somehow, he would bear the blame
the van drove a distance to a strange house
the child was introduced to a man and his spouse

The little boy was welcomed with a warm embrace
and something unfamiliar, they had smiles on their face
he was shown to a room that was set up for boys
it had things he never had, including boy toys

They spoke softly and with kindness, it felt nice
something told the child he got lucky twice
once when they took his parents and then placed here
in a house that appeared to be full of joy and cheer

Full of love and happiness, it was indeed
they filled that child's every single need
their words of praise and actions of love
created a child who was able to rise above

No longer did he fail at his every attempt
just the thought of the word can't gave him contempt
He thanked the Lord on a daily basis
for his new family and those loving faces

For he knew deep down in his heart
that the Lord was responsible for this fresh start
and he made a promise to himself
when he had kids, harsh words would remain on the shelf

Wow, this is such a wonderful story
that brought tears to my eyes. It's
such a wonderful feeling to know that
there are people out there that will
love and respect you despite all that
you have been through in life. There's
always that star up in the sky watching
over you everyday and waiting for the
perfect time to land in your heart.

Beautiful work here my friend and I
    really enjoyed reading this one!
Take care and thanks a lot for sharing
    it here!

How true your words! I know those same harsh words, and vowed I would never be like that with my children. I usually walked away if I was that mad or upset with my boys. I tried not to let them know the "harsh words" and unkind things that I knew.

I love your take on the prompt!

Best of luck in this contest!

    Love you bunches and bunches

    • yes, it is easy to derail a families history of an abuse train if from harsh words you will refrain!

Love ya too hun and thank you for the comment... Suzi
  • I can so relate to this one! I just wasn't as lucky, but still put the "harsh words..." on the shelf. It is so nice to know that children without homes or families can still find the try sweetness of life and rise above their adversities. Thank you for sharing the wonderful poem.

    BLESSINGS, Doris

    • Thank you Doris, when I saw this prompt, I knew instantly it was the one I had to write for because I have fostered many a children and sometimes a kind word is ALL they need to change. It amazes me sometimes how many children are surprised to hear kind words from an adult. It is almost heartbreaking at times. Children should grow up EXPECTING to hear kindness and not be surprised by it. Thank you for your generous and kind review of this write and God Bless you dear! Hugs, Suzi
