Reflections on the future

The mirror of the elves can show the world
Reflections of the future and the past,
Strange images of scenes still tightly furled,
That may not be resolved 'til dice are cast.

If you should turn aside to change the scene,
Beware that what you feared may come to be.
You cannot always know what futures mean
Or trust those things the mirror lets you see.

The wisest see the choices they must make;
Forewarned they have the time to think things through.
When paths divide they'll know the way to take
To find the doom they know they must pursue.

Have you the wisdom that the elves demand,
Before the mirror acts on your command?

Author notes

Those who know and love the Lord of the Rings can pour scorn on me for over-simplifying things but Tolkein had a whole chapter whereas I have the fourteen lines of a Shakespearian sonnet.

I kinda picked up on the Lord of the Rings here, I loved the whole setting of this Sonnet and I think you did a splendid job with creating a poem from the picture prompt!

Thank you for taking the time and all the best in the contest!

  • Hello.

I have to say I don't recognise this from the Lord of the Rings, and I have read the books and seen the films, so that leaves just a real poor memory to blame, ahaha. Anyway your actual write makes me think of an overseer, looking down at it all, a wise one at that, offering wise words to those who seek it, but not imposing on the free will decisions of others. Your rhythm and rhyme excellent, flowed very nicely in a relaxed manner. I wish you well in the contest.

    My regards.

No idea if it is in the films, the way they left some vital parts out and radically changed other bits has left me unwilling to watch them

You'll find "The Mirror of Galadriel" in Book 2 (That is in the first volume, their being 6 "books" in three volumes). It is just before they leave Lothlorien, Galadriel allows Frodo and Sam to see in her Mirror. Frodo sees the difficulties ahead and "The Eye" but Sam sees images of the scouring of the Shire.
      • Hello CricketJeff. Thank you for the information, very kind of you. Very exact as well, hahaha. But your accuracy has jogged my memory. Thank you, and my regards.

In answer to your notes - why?

Three coneys for you to boil in your pot, much to the annoyance of Gollum.

    Boffi!

    Love your fairy tales.
The concept of pursuing doom makes this a rather adult fairy tale, of course.
I have some friends like this and they don't live in my garden.
