For what seems so long ago, I was a little girl
a princess of nature, who dreamt the impossible.
Raced many sunsets on invisible horses and
spoke to fairies, where we often would meet
between the dripping ferns and the night crawlers.
~ A life of paradise ~
Before they were prepared, I became a lady of all trades;
challenging every challenge, I embraced that uninspiring
realm of the "grown ups."
Treasures, I securely left behind;
uncertain when the opportunity would
arise for recovery. This horizon I now knew
to be home; quickly became a place of uncertainty.
Forcefully, I chose to break the one stallion in life
and solemnly became a wife, attempting to
paint her own canvas in life. Many tries later,
I realized the paint was inferior. Cooperation
and commands failed. It refused to blend in.
To the naked eye, the canvas appeared
beautifully maintained. Oh, how this horizon
became my silent prison...
Breaking free took a terrible toll on me,
nearly all my feathers, especially those
for flight, were ripped out.
With little to no wings and no nest,
I faced the nights alone fighting off
the scavengers and predators who could smell
my weakness while my horizon slowly drowned in tears.
My strength returned in time as my flight feathers grew,
for I'll never forget the dawn of my resurrection as I
spread new wings. In competition with the scarlet sky,
a phoenix reborn.
Witnesses to this very day, recalls the stillness
of that morning, as I screeched;
"I AM ALIVE! I AM FREE!"
I claimed the sun as mine that day as I soared into the sky,
intimately nose diving straight into the suns rays
as it rose in welcoming me with its loving light.
Allowing gravity to capture me as I raced with the wind;
my eyes narrowed while I approached the distant hills,
blinking from the intense beauty.
My heart melted from absolute joy while my
horizon sparkled with undiscovered potential.

This is one of those poems that everyone can relate which, having their wings clipped, being caged. And, you've written in such a vivid way, it's truly great.
. G'luck.

I give high marks for any poem that gives me a passionate feeling that is personal to the author. This one is exceptional in that regard.
This is an unbelievably frank and revealing study of the American Dream. It is clever, descriptive, expressive and original. I think the ending is a little over the top, but, since it was the perspective of the author and not an unemotional narrator, it can be taken with a grain of salt.
Thank you for this most worthy entry into our contest and thanks for putting the judges in the proper order.

< Sorry if I insulted you.
But I did find the imageries, to be frank, rather trite. I assumed the innitial comment was self-explanatory. I apologize for not writing an essay of critique for your poem is unnecessarily long. And yes, as you say, I am new here. And thank you for the warm welcome.

I love the journey you took us on here... from innocence to being jaded, to once again embracing life as a journey with bright horizons! I think everyone will be able to relate to this as we have all been through similar journey's in our lives.
Lovely write!

Caught my eye...
and a bite size chunk of my heart also, xcellent write with great imaginative landscapes, I've been locked in a few cages of the mind so I can relate to this, words that leapt at me from my own personal prisons; "Awakening" "Revelation" "Expanding Horizons"
yes, they take thier tole allright, but freedom you can't put a price on, it's worth every cent...

ah the dreams we race when we are children, that is ghood, i wish we could move those dreams along into aduthood but alas we never seem to do that. free - we are all free to a degree but then we start thinking and lose the thread but we need to think to stay free - a paradox sadly, still we can move along the smiles and laugh our existence into the here and now, some of us will be thought of in time as revolutionaies and others will fall into time's ways
it mattetrs not which side we are on as long as we tried

Wow this is phenomenal!
I can well relate to this, as it is exactly what I went through and which has left me a single mother raising my daughter alone since she was just 7 (she is 18 now).
This is a masterpiece of factual heart rending poetic perfection, and so written from your heart and soul, and I empathize with you all the way on this.
Brilliant and fantastic work, gripping and captivating all the way through well penned and poetically graphic fine sculpting in poetic perfection and also of vital poetic importance. Send this to the single parent publications and groups it will inspire many to soldier on.
You are amazing. Well done, bravo, love it!
Poetic Hugs,
Kaz.

I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed when you agreed to be in our contest. I was captivated with your feeling of life and growing up. Trading your “princessdom” of “between the dripping ferns and the night crawlers” for the uncertainty of adulthood is a feeling I share with you. This poem is unique and wonderful for that reason; I as the reader put myself into the poem as I saw myself in every aspect. I even felt the marriage part as I almost became a bride myself. Bravo!
Love,
Amera♥

Interesting write. It's amazing how knowledge is a double edged sword. It fills that curious void of 'more' but leaves you unhappy and jaded in the end. Loved this. Cheers and good luck in the contest!
