Loneliness survives, even though
those who care to accept friendship
and grace everyday. Emotion will
crawl on the sidewalk to etch
"I Love You", written in yellow chalk
to fade away. Friends pick up a spirit
that needs to be mended, hair is brushed
and they hold her smile in place, as tears
streak the window, as she looks down
a path where escape has been removed.
Traces of emotion are sponged into a napkin
left on the table that makes heartache vanish,
as hope will pretend it never happened.
How has loneliness survived with lovers who
play hide and seek as passion never shared.
This tree carries the scars etched in a trunk
where hearts initialed have grown over
and no longer share love. Aged feelings
of bitterness cut the Oak down. It burns,
ashes of the Phoenix will not rise. She mumbles
in the dark to pain carried; memories hope
someone hears her when she cries.
