Missing image
Ah've enjoyed these little getherin’s
Sin furst I cum ter t’Fylde
Ah’ve nivver wun a pot
But ahm noaan vexed or riled.

It ain’t the thowt o’ winnin’
That prompts me ter tak part.
But bein’ part o’ t’fun
Is’t thing that warms mi heart.

Ahm noaan sayin at I’d be bothered
If tha thowt me scribblin’ best
Nay. Ah’d be jest as praad
If tha’d pinned a medil on mi chest.

Nooh this in’t really a competition
Bur an act o’ conservation.
It helps to keep folk speyk
Into t’next generation.

Ahh count missen sae lucky
That ah’d chance ter gan ter skooil;
An larn’t ter speyk Queens English
An not sound like a gormless fooil.

But nah ah’m gerrin owd
Ahm startin’ to feel reet sad
That ahh canner talk in t’Tyke
As weel as mi own granddad.

Fur wee cherish all the customs
Of all ahr friends fra far off places
But o’ Geordie, Tyke and Lanky
We’re slowly wippin’ aht all t’traces.

So I’se med missen a promise
That ahl do all thar ah con
T’ larn ter talk and write
Like a gradely Yorkshire mon.

Then yan year I’ll cum ‘ere
An ah’ll really do t’job reet.
Bur till then ah’ll happily listen
To all your voices sweet..

Author notes

******* I WON !!!!!!!! ***********
Every year I try to attend the Fylde Folk Festival and to take part in their Dialect competition. It's a bit awkward as a true Yorkshire Tyke in the heart of all those Lancashire poets but it is very enjoyable.
This is a tongue in cheek entry / tribute that I shall be offering to them this year.
About the only part of this that matches traditional dialect poetry is the overly descriptive title

******* I WON !!!!!!!! ***********

    CONGRATULATIONS

Oh Well Done Jim, a reet gud job youve done 'ere.
My brother in law and wife are here from UK right now and I've been quite comfy in my old dialect too, sounding a bit like a gormless fool! I'm surprised how easily it all comes back to me after 35 years away. Well done Jim. Von
ps don't add a translation - it's good fun working out what it is you're saying Von
