Stone. Just stone as unwavering, steady
And sure as the flow of time itself. It
Reached out beyond the distance like an arm
Of some great behemoth, using the world
As a hoist to lever itself from the
Hidden shadows. It was a marvel so,
Only in its sheer scale and grandiose,
For it was not held by distance, nor choked
By clouds, and yet here I sat upon its
End, conquerer of an unchartered bridge.
My journey had begun many weeks ago,
I had set off from my old home alone
And musing, as I was often wont to
Do, and the Earthly land had disappeared
From sight at what I can only guess would
Have to be days before. I had been chased
By misty ghosts, half of which would lend me
Their courage, if only so that I may
Keep my pace above the rest of them, who
Seemed bent on making my trip so flustered
That I might fall from the reaching path. My
Perch, as it were, for I was as a bird,
Waiting for both the sharp sight of any
Prey and also for the sweet sound of my
Younger nestlings to come to come to me in their
Own form. The waterfall, two hundred yards
Below and double that behind me, fell
Both lazily and emphatic'lly through
The sky to vanish. To the edge of my
Sight I could only spot the strange smoke which
Plumes when a maddened wave thunders against
A defiant cliff and scatters in pain,
Defeated. Yet although I recognised
The fog I could not find the sea-wrath with
Which I associated it, for the
Sea was calm below me, and seemed still from
This height. And it made me wonder. I was
Wracked suddenly with a desire to find
What lay at the bottom, beyond all things
Scholarly written and conceived, and I
Would sacrifice all my worldly wisdom
I acquir'd thus far - I would sacrifice
It all in order to discover that
Of which no one can dream of dreaming sensibly.
End.
