There was a time
When I thought Poetry was only pretty rhymes
Laid out in rhythm like misplaced music notes
When it was something either sad
Or happy
Poetry was simplistic
Easy to understand
There was a time before I knew you
When my words were stunted
Forced and broken
A misunderstood jigsaw puzzle
Made entirely of halted words and bad metaphors
There was a time before I knew you
Before I knew the value of words
before I appreciated how a simple sentence
Could put the entire day in a new perspective
Before I was touched so deeply
That I cried for someone I never knew
Who's story was not my own
There was a time
When just seeing a new title under your name
Made me smile
In fact it was yesterday
And as always I read the poem three times
First fast
And then slow
Then yet again out loud
Losing myself in your words
Closing my eyes and seeing it
Feeling the emotional blows
And wanting nothing more than to reach out and touch you
Like you have always touched me
Because you always have
Whether it was the gentle caress of sensuality
Or the harsh brush with true reality
A tickle to make me laugh
Or embrace that accompanies the tears
There was a time before I knew you
When words were only words

i love the unbridled admiration in your words, the vulnerablity. it makes feel like hugging you

I cried last night
reading his poetry
i laughed, too
and I smiled
and sometimes I sighed
sometimes i just reflected
mostly i was in awe of him
the way he shows himself
he doesn't hide, he offers all
vulnerable and exposed
and i fell in love with his poetry
as it would appear you have.
this is wonderful.

In all honesty, I have been secretly in love with AJ and not so secretly in love with his poetry- for more than a year I believe. He is, above all things, open and honest in his poems. He carries humor and wit, and he plays on emotions like a musician would a violin. Everything about him is beautiful, and he is definitely something to be admired. I'm very glad you liked my poem, and even more so that you see what an amazing poet he is.
