Snippy Snippy Shears

The grand lady from the Manor
    With her snippy snippy shears
    Cuts flowers from her garden
As she has done for years.

But she doesn't hear the flowers scream
    Nor see the garden's tears
    She doesn't feel the heartbreak
    The garden's felt for years.

The flowers in the vases die
    All the wilted petals fall,
    Their lifeline has been severed
With no thought for them at all.

Dead flowers from all the vases
Join the rubbish out the back
The gardener takes them right away
And dumps them down the track.

And the lady of the manor
    With the snippy snippy shears
    Doesn't heed the screaming flowers
    Any protest finds deaf ears.

I know that plants have consciousness, and for myself prefer to enjoy flowers as they grow - but I do cut them, to take to my mother, as she is no longer able to walk outside and enjoy a garden. Lovely poem, Bob.

I can understand your taking flowers inside to your Mother. Helps them no end. It did with My Mum before she passed on. I appreciate and value your comments.

    This is a nice ...

children's poem, but this is a contest for adult poetry.

    Thanks for entering anyway.

What exactly is 'childrens Poetry'? I have read poetry to children and adults for 45-50 years and have found there is no distinction in poetry, children or adults, poetry is a matter of taste. Children have asked me to read what I thought was too heartbreaking for them but they loved it anyway. It's your contest so, I accept your right to remove my poem from your contest, no problem.
      Cheers

Liked the usage of " snippy snippy" it compounds action and imagery yet also alludes to how cutting the action is. The Lady of the Manor is probably as cavalier with the feelings of foxes and foxhunting but I digress. I have never known anyone before who felt this way about flowers except for me, most others cannot understand it but why scythe them from their beds , place them in position in ornamental vase and watch them die by degrees each day? I love to see them growing naturally.

I appreciate your comments on this one, I really do. Most people don't consider the flowers, or the plant they cut them from, just the decorative effect of the flowers in the house. I'm glad someone else feels as I do, that flowers last longer in the garden where they grow.

    JUST TOPS!

This is a beautiful, sad poem. I don't know whether people actually realise that these wonderful little things in nature feel this pain and fear. I have seen documentaries about this kind of thing. You wrote this with a great deal of care and compassion, and i sense that you are so near to nature, you can understand all around you, regardless of what living thing it is. Just a point on the first verse. I read the last line on this a few time and couldn't quite get it to jug with the rest of the verse. Perhaps, but only a suggestion - instead of 'As she had done for years' How about something like 'As she had done all these years'

There are opinions for and against the idea that plants have feelings,I think they do, hence the poem, but others have perfectly good reasons why not. I am near to nature and like it that way. Lis said I would see something beautiful in a dust storm.
That last line in verse one has to stay as it is, I appreciate your thoughts and suggestion but the lilt of the poem is part of its charm. Your suggestion adds another syllable and interupts the musical flow of that line.
Many thanks for your comments as I really do appreciate the feedback.

      Cheers for now.

Jackie, walk around the garden and enjoy the flowers for longer, plus the variety of perfumes. For the house get silk ones, the petals don't fall and they last for years. No rubbish to clean up.

So true! I actually very very rarely even have flowers.. I'm terrible at looking after them.. or plants for that matter!! I live in an apartment so no garden.. but I do enjoy my mothers!

Jackie, the silk ones would be just the thing for you. We had some when I lived in PNG and they lasted about four years. We used to put one lot away and new ones out so we had a variety. I guess they would cost an arm and a leg these days.
I offer you my sympathies for living in apartment, I personally hate them.

    Lovely

Oh I loved "Snippy Snippy Shears!" Such melody and flow when it's read and the ideas for this poem are different which is always nice to see. I can just see the scene of this lady in the garden snipping away...alby

I have a nice big garden right around the house and there is nothing I like doing better than just wandering around looking at the flowers and bushes etc that are growing. I don't like flowers in the house myself and have always felt that the garden must miss the flowers that are cut to put in vases. I am grateful for your comments and thank you for them. Comments feed the spirit and keep the pen active on the paper.

As always a delightful read and some words to ponder although the mixture of humor is wonderful. At times , I think, your magic pen just creates an idea beyond what is normal. And that is true talent.

I have a strange outlook on life at times. I believe that every living thing should be free to live its own life with as little interference from humans as possible. My Dad would never allow cut flowers in the house, he said the flowers screamed when they were cut. Thanks for your very kind comments,I love 'em.
