A Love Unlike No Other

Chips manifest the brown
Creating a weary look
Upon the old table
Lies open a dusty book

Upon its pages is a word
Small, black and proud
It's drawn with care and precision
And starts to draw a crowd

Small black dots
Come rushing to the page
Jumping past the word
In a thrashing rage

They bump into each other
Then stick side by side
Urging more to come along
In the stunning ride

The dusty book has come alive
The picture is now clea
Just one word attracted more
"I always loved you so my dear"

It was written by a mother
Quite some time ago
Intended for her daughter,
The words weren't just for show

The daughter never saw the words
As they were estranged
But she wrote them anyway
In case things should change

It may have been there many years
It may have been there none
But in any case the book was found
By her youngest son

He endeavoured to find his sister
The one he'd never known
Just so he could show her
What she should have been shown

Many years went by so fast
He never gave up on her
Then one day his luck turned up
And his fingers typed, a blur

'To my little sister,
Although you're not so little now,
Our mother passed some years ago
And I want you to know how,

'She spent her life caring
For everyone she loved
Right up til the very end
When death delivered the final shove

'Although you might not know it
She never stopped loving you
I have something to show you
So you'll know it's true'

The next week he met his sister
And gave her the old book
She paused a moment, then he said
"Go on, just take a look"

She opened the old book slowly
As paper crackled under hand
Her eyes skimmed through the pages
Until she saw the lone black strand

As she dutifully read it
Tears welled into her eyes
And finally in that moment,
A mother and daughter said goodbye
