Quilting the Seasons

blankets of blooms in the spring
covers her hollows and hills
polka dots of yellow brings
the joy of buttercup frills

summer’s sheet is made of haze
from the heat of natures bed
passionate nights with hotter days
require a much lighter thread

laying ‘neath the harvest yield
sleeping form of mother earth
patchwork quilt of hay fields
covering her ample girth

handsewn squares of rustic farms
in gingham and calico
nestled in the mountains arms
where the red maples glow

later down in the season
when the days are cold and bright
we hope she finds a reason
for thick quilts of winter white
