Shady Pines (Live Version)

Charlie traced the rain drops that ran down his window pane
and paced the length of his room and checked his watch again
only five minutes had passed sinced he'd checked his watch before
Charlie placed his retirement gift in an overtly neat sock drawer
and there confined to the darkness innocent of but one crime
the watch continued ticking guilty just of marking time

Charlie walked into the day room his hello met by a vacant stare
by those who sat open mouthed as if he wasn't there
Charlie shook his head, was this the future he would face?
pondering this to the dining hall he sat down and took his place
opposite a lady dribbling soup back to her bowl
who didn't care her eternal lunch had long since turned cold

Charlie had lost his appetite and so returned to his room
into the light of sanity that hid demential shadows of doom
he returned his watch to his wrist thought it better that it stayed
as a compass in a maze of hours his watch would point the way
unlike those souls downstairs who it seems had lost their way
who cared not the hour of another nameless day

A stack of Charlies' records sat besides his gramaphone
salvaged from a love filled ship that was once Charlies' home
at the death of his wife his ship had begun to sink
washed ashore upon a tide of grief this castaway was left to think
yet his music was a fire lit upon his lonely beach
that signalled passing memory ships their love was still in reach

Charlie had taken a fall and the wound would never heal
and with his son in laws' signature Charlies' fate was sealed
the doctor who drummed his fingers anxious for his baseball game
had recommended Shady Pines and life would never be the same

Charlie tuned his radio to his favourite late night show
the one that took requests and played music he would know
"you're listening to late night love affair and we've a letter no one signed,
but the love shines right on through,as I read these tender lines
it says come to me Charlie for all your hurt I never meant,
and there the letter ends with the words, from heaven sent"

Please tell me what you think

oh Sweet Charlie, what have thee done,
to wander comatose in fields of shady pine
scenting heaven far away and close.

    oh Charlie!
    WEll done!
Loved the layer of visuals and tenderness!

A great story, well told and the music is terrific. You have ticked all the right boxes as far as I am concerned, this is sad and yet a glimmer of hope at the end, will he meet his love again?

    Well done Craig...loved it.
