The Number 3

In reaction to the truth
Misinterpreted aggression
It's something intra personal
Something seldom understood
Lustful illusions restored
The fear is dulled by an unknown comfort.
Though as more is remembered
New anxieties are gleaned.
Memories engraved.
Scars remain though cuts have healed.
She carries it with her everywhere.
But no body knows.
The thoughts are reoccurring.
She keeps them to herself.
Who would understand
The impact it still has.
It won't just disappear.
Regrettably, the past never goes away.
It carries on and grows larger.
It expands to fill more space.
It pushes thoughts aside.
But certain ones won't be silenced.
And there's nothing to be done.
When the decisions already been made.
And 12 years later you still remember.
Wondering what he's doing now.
Will history repeat?
She tells herself she'll prevent that.
Yet how can you save another,
When you can't even protect yourself?

Okay, here goes: When I read this I thought of a close friend who was abused as a child; she was the eldest of 5 girls. She "forgot" about the abuse until her late 20's, and as the memories came back, they overtook her every waking moment -- she also worried constantly about her sisters... of whom it turned out that at least 2 others were also abused... she had tormenting thoughts, and at times engaged in some self-hurting, because of shame, and guilt, and a powerlessness most people wouldn't understand. It took me many years and some sessions with her therapist to even partially understand... I think this poem could mean something like that... but even if my interpretation is wrong, your writing is strong enough to allow for multiple interpretations, left to the reader, with such powerful images and descriptions of the way our burning thoughts can take us over. A very good read. Thanks for posting.

It actually is about abuse. I didn't know if it gave off that essence quite right, but you got it! Thanks for the applause and I'll be sure to read some of your poetry a little later (babysitting right now so I have to go =/)
