As youthful adult life begins
Counting the gains for future rest
Where every golden dream fits in
Then when love shines its guiding light
Start watching pennies, watching cents
To build a home and raise new life
To clothe and school and give the best
Then speculate; no, not invest
So pounds and dollars roll on in
Who's watching pennies, watching cents
As housing markets fall to sin
Now you're an old and broken sight
Still looking for your true success
You sit alone into the night
Still watching pennies, watching cents
