"Drinking tunes played on a smoking piano"

"Drinking tunes played on a smoking piano"

An unbathed piano has that certain sound
the first time its played in so long
the way the higher notes crack and squeal
while the lowers so unassumingly drone on about something you didn’t want to hear about
I still find it beautiful
The way It cant quite find the rhythm
how it stays nervous throughout the whole conversational recital
How its clearly to shy for you to lead it into half time because it remembers how warm and easy it used to all be
How it tries its hardest to keep you away from those flat minors because its sang them before and knows where that leads
But you insist and force it out, dissident after dissident, angry after it plays what you pushed it to do
And maybe that’s why you stopped the composing
Maybe you just wanted to sit down and play a measure or two just to test it out
But that piano had gone through enough simple melodies to last a lifetime
It was ready for a symphony to be played
You started with all the right chords…but now its been forced to Finnish on its own as a requiem

Author notes

I can see the Tom Waits connection and even wondered if you liked Waits while I was reading this. Nice job, some great phrases and a good, solid tone.

I don't know if you realise how beautiful and heartfelt this poem is. I loved the imaginary and the deep sadness in the words. Thank you for sharing this in my contest.
