autumn falls

she blows in with the night
an autumnal storm front
filling the house,
rattling windows
and slamming doors.

like fall winds
she blows now cool,
now warm,
now cool again.

a force of nature
she talks in sunshine
and cloud shadows,
a hint of rain
in her voice.

with shorter days
in her eyes,
her hair falling leaves
she blossoms rose-like
on my lips
and wraps us both
in the arms of a
harvest moon.

her lips taste
like morning air,
the scent  of her
clings to my skin,
cinnamon and rose.

lying by the fire
she dreams summer,
whispers winter
and like autumn leaves
goes up in smoke.

Living in the midwest, there's a definite blend between summer teasing into fall. I can almost smell the leaves burning and hear the rhymes of 'Injun Summer' being read to me as a child. I love everything fall offers up..and I loved your poem.

    With love,

    Excellent personification ...

and yes: the reader is swept along in swirls and twirls until the Muse of the poem has become not season nor she, but sensation.

Well done Garrison! From excellent to better, you soar.

    Blessed be.

    Garrison,

You already know your poetry speaks to me in ways most literature can never be capable of. Your writing is on a whole separate level from anything else I've ever read. Ted Hughes and the likes have nothing on you.

I keep thinking you're as good as you could possibly get, yet every read is a fresh surprise - shocking me with how much you continue to advance poetically.

The imagery in this was... well it's beyond description. There aren't words in the English language sufficient enough to describe the poem or how it touched me.

Every word continues echo in my mind - this is one of those unforgettable writes. One that should be etched eternally on the collective conscious.

Definitely one for the future Literature textbooks and "best poem" anthologies.

You are just a constant source of enjoyment and amazement.

    Keep it up!

PS - this seemed to have deep psychological undertones (which shouldn't be a surprise really) - the "hot/cool" parts and her volatility remind me of Bipolar disorder and the likes --- am I imagining this?

Now that I think about it, I'm sure your poem "Autumn" provided the first spark of inspiration for this one. I had read yours just a few days before. So, I really have you to thank for the initial idea. In particular I remember the picture that went with yours with that bright orange leaf in a pile of black and white leaves.

So, it is I who should thank you.

    "in the arms of a
    harvest moon."

..you make familiarities fresh. I agree.. a twisting, yet classical beauty.. it breathes with such life.
What a muse you must have.

I agree with Tara. It's always a pleasure to read you, Garrison, especially a poem about my favourite season (it's spring now here in South Africa but it still feels like winter). Lovely personification of the season here - I simply loved this one...the season of "leaf poetry"!
