It Takes a Lot Of Living

It takes a lot of living in a house to make it home
You need to raise a family which can't be done alone.

You will have to find a partner, one that you can trust
Who is loving and caring, so your dream won't turn to dust.

With some worry and some heartache and a lot of fun
To show the world that you're alive, your time has just begun.

The children who come along bring joy and problems, true?
You help them grow and teach them, to help each other too.

The size of house you live in doesn't bring you extra joys
Nor the maze of gadgets in it, they're just electric toys.

No matter where your house is,in the city or the bush,
There will be times when you will need, just an extra push.

If you're in the hot dry inland, the mountains or the coast
Your home is where your heart is, the place you love the most.

Sure, you like the scenery you see close by the shore,
But you like so much better, what's seen from your back door.

Hold onto all your pleasures, forget the little groans
'Cause it takes a lot of living in a house to make it home.

Ah, I see why my 'road' poem bothered you, Bob. Indeed, it does take a lot of living in a house to make a home, and you can't do that if you're on the road. Beautifully expressed, as usual, reminding me of the little things that make up life.

Mercedes, from the early 60's to 2007, I knew not when my next move would come nor where it would be. Now I know where I will be next year. Unless you are like me, it would be difficult to understand my situation. We are all a product of our experiences and how we dealt with them, and we must wear the consequences of our actions. That being said, life is good now. Many thanks for your astute comments, dear lady, I really appreciate them.

Welcome to my page. I thank you for taking the time to comment and enjoying the read. I was an inveterate wanderer for many years and have now settled down. I am enjoying having a place I can call 'home' after so many years wondering when and where I would be next year. This poem reflects my feelings.

I'm pleased the gremlins have gone. I wandered around the south pacific for about 45 years and ahve only recently settled into some sort of contented home life. It's pretty good and I can recommend it to anyone. Thanks for your comments and for your patience while I sorted out the gremlins.

    So True!

What lovely thoughts of family and home you speak of here. We need to be reminded of these things from time to time and here you have done so, and eloquently! A lovely poem...alby

I have been an inveterate wanderer for many years and have not really had a 'home' until now. It's a precious thing to have. So many have houses where they live but, not a home. Thank you for your kind encourageing comments.

What an excellent write. You know, Bob. I like to give comments here and there to help people along with their poems, but with you, it is almost impossible to add anything anytime. Your rhyme here is delightful and every word really did hit home. I love my home best of all because it is where my heart is. You have a real grasp on life and i like what you teach me each time i am here reading your thoughts. Superb.

In our society so many houses are just that, houses. I wrote this one to emphasise that a home needs to have kids, dogs, cats, Mum And Dad, plus all the little incidents of living and loving to make a house, a home.
Thank you for your supportive comments. I really appreciate them.
