Baby

Within your sleep you gurgle
as I watch your face at rest,
chubby cheeks like a rose in bloom
for truly I am blessed.

Your scent so sweet I'm in a trance
there's nothing to compare,
inhaling your innocent beauty
of which you're completely unaware.

And as you slowly waken
your eyes are rivetted to mine,
a surge of love tugs at my heart
to me all others you outshine.

A smile then flits across your face
lighting up my world,
your feet start kicking furiously
as your fingers around mine curl.

As I gather you into my arms
and kiss your softest skin,
I am reminded of a life
that I have helped begin.

You're the beacon of the future
growing tall and proud as leafy oak,
for you I'll give my heart of love
may this be your safety cloak.

I only hope if I'm ever a mother I can be half as lovely as the one in this poem. Thank you for this entry. The images in each line are also very apparent which is exactally what I was looking for. You're an admirable poet. Best of luck in this contest.
