It may have been the blueness of his eyes
that colored every sunrise, sunset, and rainbow
more vivid than I had ever seen.
He made sure I witnessed,
every miracle.
Waking me with kisses,
coffee ready,
holding my hand, guiding me to see
another brillant beginning.
Feeding the gulls
as the day began to hush
into a lover's lullaby.
Observing rainbows standing strong
against an army of black clouds
rolling in, like fate.
Bathing in the peace of our silence
gazing at the sky being painted
as I drank the awe
that covered his face.
The day, completed
in the same amount of glory,
making love.
I would leave, heart full
carrying these memories
hoping my love would fill him
until our next visit.
He would grieve, like a widower
finding no beauty in anything
alone.
My love became his cage,
so I set him free.
I still see the blueness of his eyes
in the art of day,
look to the sky, and wish
for him to be whole.

Looking farther into the words
Rick -
Humm..setting him free..? really a question ..if the situation stated is true..you touched the depth of the life where love is unpredictable thought in terms of its reaction over the life of the lovers..a heartfelt write is here..well said...

Wow Michelle. I loved this. It is very vivid in its description and subtly sensual. I found myself relating to this though it is written from the perspective of the woman. I related to the feelings you give the man. I certainly relate to the third and second to last stanza. I know that emptiness all too well.
Also my eyes are blue.

I can't even begin to explain how beautiful your words are. It's perfectly sweet and tender, with a touch of sadness throughout. I have felt these feelings in the past, so I can relate to it all. Memories will always remain with you, that's something no one could ever take away. You have seen a lot in the blueness of his eyes, what a blessing that must have been.
The selflessness of love, yeah you penned this well, to say the least.
Good luck in the contest, not that you'll need it.
Loveandblessings2u & yours always
