What they say.
I'd take their scales
And whip-like tails,
Their tongues of blue,
Their croaking too.
I'd take their claws
And bearded jaws,
Their sticky feet,
The way they eat.
I'd take their spines
And cool designs
Over you
Any day.
Author notes
It's nothing special, I know, but someone recently told me that one day I would meet a man for whom I would give up my reptiles. I therefore felt the urge to denounce them. I can guarantee that that will never come to pass.
No person could ever take their places and no man could ever be the man for me if he would have me give them up. If I were a single mother would I give up my children for another husband? No. My pets are not just pets. Many of them I rescued and nursed back to health because they were neglected. A few were even born into my keeping. They are my friends and better friends than most of the people I have given that title in the past.
I have made promises and commitments to them. I don't take in an animal for just a period of time - to throw away when it isn't as easy to care for them. I take them in for their lives and mine. And what idiot would want to marry someone who would break their promises so easily?
Oh yes, I forgot. They're just animals.
I would rather die unmarried.
Please tell me what you think

Hey darlin', this is amusing.
And why the blazes would anyone assume you'd have to give you your pets to make a fellow happy...especially if that fellow was worth his salt and your time?
I hope you're havin' a lovely day.

This is amusing with a subtle use of rhyme. You have brought these wonderful creatures to life in front of our eyes. A great poem thast is entertaining to read.

This had me chorteling in my milkshake.... very excellent no matter how you slice it!!!

Very cute poem; it brought a smile to my lips at the end... but a sombre meaning behind it... too often, we are asked to give up what we love, by somebody we would love... but we have to hold our ground with the things that mean the most of us... for me, it was hard to stick to my guns, but I did

As usual, flawlessly written (but then again, I don't think I could go through all the poems you've written and find one that isn't
)

I raise Iguanas as well & rescue animals -- I used to run a no kill shelter with my mother, so I really love this & relate to it. My love for animals is a part of me, & if you love me... you love ALL of me, including the animals. Reptiles, rodents, whatever they may be... they're here to stay!! Lol.
Not to mention the fact that this was very well written.

Oh I would love to do something like that. I'd love to have a huge animal sanctuary.

I love my reptiles, so I enjoyed reading this. I think people who think bad of them just have no experience with them. Mine responds when I speak to him, he gets excited.
I like you poem it flows, really liked reading it

Thanks! What kind do you have? I know, I have so many and each individual one (even those of the same species) has its own personality.

Eeew, someone told you that one day you'll meet someone who will force you to change for them? How is that at all a good thing? As always you're one of the few poets on here who can really spin out a piece with good meter and rhyme. This one has such short lines it feels like it should be angrily spat out quickly.
Nice work
