Arms of an Angel

It was just an ordinary day,
A day much like all others,
The sun had risen early,
Birds started their flights,
People started their days,
Just like all the other days before,
It was a peaceful day,
That all too soon changed.

People woke up and went to work in the great city,
Never suspecting a thing,
Until that fateful hour,
That hour that forever changed American lives,
That hour that caused great pain,
Suffering,
Hurt,
Anger,
And war.

As the clock struck,
A loud roar went flying by,
As the clock ticked,
A loud,
Horrifying,
Bang was heard
Then flames shot out.

Floors started to shake,
People started screaming,
People making phone calls,
For the brink of death was upon them,
Dust flying everywhere,
People in a panic,
Minds,
Confused.

Then,
Another loud roar,
Another loud bang,
More flames,
Their neighbor had been struck by the devil.

As minutes passed,
Walls began to collapse,
More calls being made,
More prayers being prayed,
More dust,
More panic,
More death.

People outside,
Standing in shock,
Unable to move their frozen cold bodies,
Sirens ringing out,
News crews arriving,
Tears fall from the sky,
Ash made tears.

People run from the buildings,
But in just one instant,
The floor beneath them shook,
And they were thrown down,
Debris falling from upper floors,
Lives,
Crushed,
People doing anything to escape,
And to have a quick death,
For death's shadows,
The devil,
Were upon them.

Smoke from the buildings,
A face appeared,
A face that will never be forgotten,
A face being hunted,
A face,
Representing death,
Representing tragedy,
Representing,
Pain.

As the buildings came down,
People unable to escape,
And in an instant,
Unknowns appeared in the buildings,
Taking a hold of the people,
Taking them up in their arms,
And flying them away.

People trapped,
Being released from the reckage,
By unknowns,
Pulling them to safety,
Helping them.

This day,
Shook the whole earth,
Hearts broke,
People not giving up on their loved ones,
But all there was left,
Was a list,
One long list,
Representing souls that were carried away by unknowns,
But these unknowns aren't so unknown,
These loved ones,
They were carried away,
In the arms of an angel,
They suffer no more,
Nor did they sufer for long.

Candles lit the earth that night,
Tears fell,
Lives forever changed,
People not understanding,
This nation,
Unable to move,
Unable to breath,
Unable to ever be the same,
Carried,
In the arms of an angel.

Author notes

To all the families who lost loved ones on 9-11. They shall never be forgotten, and they were rescued and carried away in the arms of an angel to better place where they suffer no more. May you find comfort in the arms of an angel. Poem inspired by "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan.

  • This is a beautiful poem. The way you said everything so delicately and yet so bluntly was great. I love it. Best of luck in the contest!
