An Ode to Thoth

Time traveler, lost
why would you land
in this land
in this now?
like a fire at a wedding
or laughter in the time of
WAR
Your beauty is out of place.

You spin like the sun,
radiating warm love
and fiery madness,
lighting this doldrum world,
exposing the daily follies
of homo sapiens.

(but all too human behind the name of a god)

Time traveler lost
you hold in your hands
the ghosts
of Klaus Nomi,
Oscar Wilde,
and all the other
flaming
revolutionaries
Who burned bright
and out
Far before
the wolves of fame
came to feast at the table...

I pray that they leave the bones.

There are those who are born with a great but strange and undigestable talent maybe a couple times in a generation. The ones who generally are viewed as kooks until their deaths. When, of course, their genius is unanimously declared by the powers that be. Bukowski was one, loved only in his later years, beatified in death. The New-wave German Opera singer Klaus Nomi. The New York Dolls. Daniel Johnston. (he may as well be dead!) Harry Partch... The list goes on and on. Thoth, as he is called is a perfect example. A study in genderlessness, shameless and pure, he sings in a language of his own creation. He blurs the lines without even seeming to realize they were there to begin with. He is one of the most uniquely talented people born of this generation. A new york city street performer, who should be putting on lavish productions in the finest opera halls across the country, BUT! is far too strange to be accepted by mainstream society.
He will probably die eventually in total obscurity, but I get the feeling that he will be remembered for hundreds of years... Above is a link to a documentary about this fascinating, shamanic man... -ge0rge

ha, I enjoy your angst and I couldn't agree more. This reminds me of something I recently wrote in reflecting upon various virtuosos, focusing on Franz Liszt.

Wow. this is one of the best things i've read on this site recently...

    Far before
    the wolves of fame
came to feast at the table...

All of the lines/stanzas are amazing, and you paint such beautiful and intriguing images with your words. the only thing i could think to criticize is that the font is a little for the background. this is really amazing : )
