Today when I put a fresh pillow under your head, you floated back onto it, and into a memory I thought you’d lost: Remember the drive from Lago Del Como? you said, smiling up at me; the Autostrada tunnels we drove through, dark and quick as eyeblinks, coming out to windswept cedars, and terraces of olive trees like stairs on the hillsides?
I sat on the coffee table beside your couch, and said: And oh, those hairpin curves down to San Remo, its pebble beaches, the turquoise sea, and motor bikes screaming all night! Remember, back in Milan, when you walked within the glass-domed Galleria, you found an optician’s shop, where with flowery kindness, they replaced the pin on my glasses for a “grazie, mille grazie,” nothing more.
And then we rested at a sidewalk café, sipping latte with dozens of lunching Italians, while the polizia pulled a huge yellow rubber raft into the middle of the intersection, bright bouquets on each corner, then stood about smoking, as we all waited for an agitated man to jump from a third story window, landing among the flowers, safely, softly, as your head upon this pillow.

Wow this poem hits right on the spot for me because I think I am getting the travelers itch, but I dont think I'll ever be able to travel because of money issues. Its just something I have always wanted to do, I traveled a lot with my mom but then she passed away and I stopped traveling because of the money issues and i am without a car.
But I dont know I have always wanted to go to Italy or Greece or Japan.
Hawaii only because I have wanted to meet Dog the Bounty Hunter for so long (yeah I know corny but I truly want to meet him sometime!!!!)
He's my hero.
Anyways I loved this one because it seems to have a warm spot with me now and the ending was heart pounding. Thanks for sharing it.

Ya, hey, I like the Dog myself (a sort of guilty pleasure I don't tell lots of people about!) I love to travel, too, and am fortunate to have done a bit when I was younger -- now like you, money issues make it difficult... but I watch lots of travel shows! Thanks for reading and for your great comments.

It hit a sigh straight into my heart
I've never been to Italy [ perhaps I'll never will]
...but this is more than watching places in Italy in lifestyle channels on tv...
I love the title...it sums up all these beautiful memories
like watching "The Notebook" ...here, the charcters are very real.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful memory.

you're welcome
how would you like me to call you because I'm going to read more...I love them...honestly English is not my language...not really too brainy to read profound poems here...but yours are amazing, they are very easy to read...and I love how you write them.

Oh my........This got me all choked up as I could just see this unfolding.....A man taking care of his ailing wife and memories just rolled between the 2 of them in a moment of lucidity....Simply gorgeous!!! You captivated this reader within your poetic web!! Well done
